Being new to rock collecting, I don't know which rocks I should collect and which ones I should leave behind. I picked up this gowganda tillite, but I'm not sure if it's of any value. This is a fist sized piece. If I broke it up, would it be any good for tumbling? I don't have equipment for cabbing, but would this be good to trade with someone who makes cabs? Is it a rock found everywhere, or is it somewhat unique? Thanks, Rob Attachments:

I would imagine if broken up it would tumble much like puddingstone. The jasper being the hardest part takes a higher polish then the rest of the materials in it. If you have a few of them it might be worth trying to break just one open to test it in your next tumble batch. Theres some decent info about these rocks on this site (scroll down just a little) stoneplus.cst.cmich.edu/conglomerate.htm

From what I've read, the pink parts are granite, not jasper as in pudding stone. I was hoping someone had tried tumbling this and could save me wasting valuable tumbling time. Thanks for the link, I'm heading there now!

I have quite a bit of that sitting around waiting to be tumbled. Going to give it a try soon as I replace my tumbler.

Tillite is a cemented volcanic sediment. There are occurances of remetamorphosed tillites also , which are often green from 'serpentization of chlorite, epidote Puddingstone is just a name giving to conglomerate. It is not only jasper in it . it has substantial quartz pebbles and other rocks and minerals .

I've made a couple spheres out of that before. They turn out great. Nice shine every time!
