I've tried Surplus Center, ebay, and craigslist. It seems like ebay has the least expensive motors, but you never know what condition they're in. Does anybody have a good source for inexpensive 1/2 hp motors?
Thanks! Chuck

You could always try local electrical repair businesses. They usually have a stack of old motors that were removed from equipment that they'll sell cheap. Sometimes they'll even give them away.

One small A/C shop I worked at had a lot of old furnaces out back. For a six pack or maybe a 12 pack you could get any motor you wanted from them. When they had too many they had a scrap metal guy haul them away (the old equipment).

Another source would be look at garage sales for old table saws, etc. I've bought really crappy old lapidary equipment that had good motors. In my father's day old washing machine motors were the thing. Usually free and made to run forever. Mounting can be an issue and often the wire connections are exposed.

Try asking around at a local rock club meeting.

Seeing that you are in Minneapolis, you might try axman surplus. They have multiple locations around the Twin Cities www.ax-man.com/I know they will have motors. I don't know what kind of price these days. I used to be in there on a monthly basis buying all sorts of goofy stuff. One of the things I miss about living up there. Wish they were in Phoenix. Pawn shops can be a good source as well. The bad machine but good motor kind of approach.

I just got/won an ebay auction for a split phase 1/3 hp 1750 rpm for $40 and some change which includes shipping, it looks almost new.

Yeah, I love Ax Man, but the one near me doesn't have any motors that will work. I did find this ad in CL for a table saw: minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/tls/2890139033.htmlI don't care about the saw, but it looks like a good deal on the motor (provided it runs well). Maybe there will be some other parts I can scavenge. Chuck

I just picked it up. The motor wasn't exactly what I was looking for (3/4 hp, 3450 rpm), but for that price I took it. If need be, I can sell the motor and buy a different one. The arbor is just a bonus - I also thought about using it to make a rock saw.

Might be a good idea to check that saw out. Be sure to check the arbor and pulleys. If the arbor has sealed bearings, it's worth saving. You would get your motor, pulleys, belt and possibly a good arbor for $40.00.
Anyone into lapidary work will tell you that you can never have enough spare parts. Especially arbors and pulleys.

Chuck, I got a 3/4hp capacitor start 3450 with an old hp I picked up. I didn't notice a manual reset and when it wouldn't run I pulled the capacitor cover. It was full of saw dust. Apparently it was off a table saw as well. Reset the reset when I spotted it and it works. It was too noisy on the saw even pulley down to lower speed. Not many lapidary uses for 3450 rpm motors.

That is capacitor start too. Much higher than same hp PSC motor.
