Bacilites are gorgeous. Though I have never been drawn to fossils, I am definitely drawn to bacilites --- the gold sutures, the rich brown. Ahhhh. I bought one long ago. Also drawn to dinosaur bone, but I think that is the limit, at least so far.

Fossilman, can you post a photo of your placenticeras meeki ammonites?
Old doesn't seem to impress me so much as pretty. Dinosaur bone is an exception.

This is one I rebuilt..................Its from three different pieces of ammonite....(not bad huh)... My hunting buddy said I couldn't work with this fossil,I found only the bottom half of it and just put the other pieces of other ammonites to match this one..Lots of grinding, shaping and forming! I did it though,he was amazed! LOL My three biggest ammonites....(I have 11 ammonites)my fav. fossil... Ammonite from Russia:(only ammonite I ever bought, the rest I found) Ok,here are some of my Scaphites-"cut" This is my first scaphite I ever found-it will never be sold... Pictures don't do it any justice....The colors just "POP"!

8-)Thanks for posting those fossils. I cannot imagine creating my own ammonite from pieces of several. That's quite a puzzle and accomplishment. The sutures and colors are outstanding.
Do you find them locally?
Are you interested in all fossils, or are you interested in any particular group of fossils?
What are your priorities for whether a fossil you find gets to go home with you?
The last photo looks like the profile of a man.
Thanks!

The last photo looks like the profile of a man. Thanks! First of all thank you........... When I lived in Montana,it was only a 30 mile drive to the fossil beds.. The good thing about it,is that's my home area,I visit there every year.(going in August) Lets say, most fossils,I'm not interested in are print fossils, leaves, bugs and the such....(Also find those in my home town area).. When I go into the fields,I tell people that go with me to be expected to be an all dayer in the field -LOL... I usually take a Army "alice" backpack...It can carry over 100 pounds of goodies...Plus my tools and etc...... I find the fossil zones, than start walking them, from top to bottom, than do it again in a different area, working a grid type hunt. When I find pieces of fossils,I try to keep each fossil from getting busted up by wrapping them in foil, than newspaper, sometimes taping them together too... Some you find in pieces, but all there,so you just study the fossil, put all the pieces in a bag, than wrap them.... I've had to break the host rock that had fossils in them, because they were to heavy to carry, usually would fracture the rock into two or three pieces than just prepare the fossil out of the host rock and fix the fossil back to one piece. As for what fossils go home with me,most do that I find..My two Uncles told me years ago,"if you find something and don't know if its worth the haul, take it anyhow..You can always give it away or put it in the rock garden, but you will never find that fossil again,if you go back to find it" Usually if you hear me give a yell,I have found a great fossil-LOL!!!! I've been known to fossil hunt for over 12 hours...... I take food,water,first-aid and etc when I go.... Would I rather hunt and work fossils over other rocks and minerals........Oh hell yes!!!! I have a great fossil and rock garden on my property, there's nothing like letting a child go through that pile and finding stuff to take home with them!!!

About ready to replace mine, its been used hard for 22 years, time to retire it..LOL Probably replace it with the same Alice pack..color doesn't matter.... Don,I still have my old web belt from my old Army days, but never thought of using it,wonder if it has enough holes in it to stretch it far enough now....I'm about 90 pounds more than I was as a young buck-LOL....(Still have my helmet, duffel bag,uniform,etc.....too),I pull it out once in awhile to show the grandkids...Doesn't seem like 36+years...LOL
