I got an email this week from my rock club, and they said that a very long time rock collector passed away, and his family was having an estate sale this weekend (one of several).
I got there a little late, it was fairly far away, but they still had some interesting things. I picked out the things I wanted... but I don't know what hardly any of it is. I did get some more picture rocks!! LOL!
I'd REALLY appreciate some ID... and also, should I ask someone to cut these HUMONGOUS ones? That is, might there be anything good inside??
The ruler is 12", so they are pretty huge and heavy. The bottom left white one looks like a gigantic chalcedony, same type of skin. All are solid and hard, going to guestimate MOH 6-7
#1 Closeup of biggest one - it's got reddish orange 'flowers' imbedded:
#2 Closeup of 2nd biggest one - has small yellow crystals in that spot
#3 Closeup of a chip in the smallest one - it's multicolored inside, with reds, browns, blues and streaks of agate. The 'skin' looks composite... it looks like it may be a giant dinosaur poop... but I haven't seen the outside of one before, don't know. They had more of these, but I didn't get the biggest ones (already can't figure out how to cut them). I got this because it was showing colors:
Then I picked out 5 small barite flowers (4" diameter each). The photo is bad, the detail is much better in person:
And then got these unknown rocks too. Help would be appreciated!
#4. This green color is incredible, but not like anything I've ever seen before - it looks like a gem material of some kind, but no cracks. It's dark blue green, and has streaks of white, this one looks like drusy (I have 3 pieces of this). Because of the one piece with the orange orbitals and bloodspots, I thought it might be bloodstone... but bloodstone isn't this... I don't know, for lack of a better word, dense?:
#5 This is the only piece that has any orange orbitals:
Here's a side piece of same rock. Looks ALMOST like ocean jasper with the orbitals, but the color just isn't right:
#6 I THINK this piece is jade?? Is it?
#7 I have several pieces of this too, looks like a green veined marble material maybe?
#8 This one is a huge mystery. Got 2 pieces of it... looks like a zebra. The black is black, and the white is white. It's pretty hard, not soft at all.
#9 Same type of rock as above, but this one has a face full of tiny crystals in layers, almost like a layer of skirts:
#10 final mystery piece, is this a 'coquina' (never seen one in person, so don't know if it's the same, but looks similar)?
#11 I think these are pyrite samples? I wet them and some of the little crystals fell off... I guess they are very old (the guy collected all this stuff in the 60s I think... his rocks were all with 1960s type items like old transistor radios, other very dated things). This one seems to have several different types of crystals growing on the same rock
Here is the odd rock group:
And finally, a shot of the owyhee and odd rocks... I got a HUGE slab of picture rock with a great picture too! Also, the little ones were TUMBLED!! They aren't little either, if you look at the ruler, the tumbled pieces are pretty huge as well. He must have had a gigantic tumbler!!
I'd really appreciate the ID of the #'d pieces above... I can't even guess what they are, never seen most of them before anywhere. Thanks!!
