Since I mentioned it, anyone have a clue what this might be? It's HARD. When I got it, it was already semi preformed, with a slight polish... it was in a box of odd rocks that were very old. Looks like someone started cabbing it and gave up. I started tumbling it well before I got my cabmate. This thing has been through the tumbler 5x (but only the complete vibe cycle from 220 once)... and that's how shaped it's got. I'm afraid it would tear up my diamond wheel. No, I'm sure it's not a 10 hardness, but it's FAR harder than any agate or jasper, including the porcelains. It's TINY. About 1/2" in diameter. As you can see, still very rough shaped and scratched up after all that tumbling, but it's VERY shiny, so I used the LED light on my 20x eyepiece to prevent camera glare and to rotate the piece so I could get a pix (no fingers because I had to hold the LED light). One of the funky fires (purple), as you flip it around, it sort of 'sparks': Another funky fire (org): Closeup of orange funky fire from different angle: The stone itself has 3 colors... like a blue/green, 2 moss green patches, and solid black areas. What IS this thing:)?

Well, if someone tells us what it iS, maybe we can get some more!! That's assuming it doesn't break my grinding wheel... I'm scared to try after tumbling did nothing to it.... This isn't the only thing with fire tho. I got a piece of Icelandic Spar from him too (and see the Turgite in the other What is this thread I just started), and it has WHOLE RAINBOWS in it!!! Actually, it has a whole teeny PRISM with a rainbow in it: Here's what it looks like in the box he had: Weird stuffs.

Helen, try reading the news paper through the Iceland spar. You'll get an interesting optical effect.

Ooh... trippy! It makes the text look offset, like a shadow, but more solid. After I saw that, I tried it on everything nearby... and something interesting, it appears to displace real opal fire by MORE than the opal outlines itself (distance wise). This thing is kinda fun, wonder if it can help ID transparent/translucent stones? It didn't do anything unusual to the little blue/green round thing I can't ID yet. That may be because it's only 1/2" in diameter, and it's very hard to tell anything inside without holding a light to it. And I can't hold the spar and the light while turning the stone:P.
