Oh wow! That is seriously beautiful. The name certainly doesn't do it justice at all. Sometimes you have to wonder how these names came about; there's one heck of a story behind that one, I'd bet!

Dont know how the name came about. Theres a crick and a mountain by Burns Or, clled Stinking Water. Think it has too do with alkali. Later Clyde

Thanks everybody.
I got lucky at the rock club and found a fist size piece that others passed because it really looked like nothing but I knew right away that it was stinking water. And a bargain at .50 a pound I think it weighed about a pound ;D

OK, I can not resist this one.First, this is a nice piece of Stinking Water, and yes the creek that is near the site does stink! Being of the curious persuasion, I of course just had to walk down to the creek to see if did stink...it did...the water is drinkable, if you can get it past your nose. The next potable water from Stinking Water is the Sweet water. These names date back to the Oregon Trail days. The Oregon Trail crosses both. For a matter of interest, the Oregon Trail weaves, and winds all oven the countryside in this area caused by the location of waterholes. Today's roads make more of a shortest distance line siince we no longer have to water the oxen pulling our rigs. Woody

Quick question for those 'in the know':
Is this the same area, then, that produces the Stinking Water petrified wood?
