The economic impact of the firearms industry is up 66 percent since the beginning of the Great Recession, providing an unexpected shot in the arm for the economy, according to a new study.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation claims that the economic impact of firearm sales — a figure that includes jobs. taxes and sales — hit $31 billion in 2011, up from $19 billion in 2008.
Jobs in the firearms business jumped 30 percent from 2008 to 2011, when the industry employed 98,750.
The industry paid $2.5 billion in federal taxes in 2011, up 66 percent in three years.
"Ours is an industry with a rich history and heritage that remains vital and important to the American economy today," NSSF Senior Vice President Lawrence G. Keane said in a statement. "To millions of Americans our industry's products represent liberty, security and recreation."
Some in the industry attribute the jump in sales to fears the Obama administration will tighten gun control laws in a possible second term.
"There's a concern that in the second term the Obama administration would lead an attempt to restrict gun ownership," Mr. Keane said.
That concern, known in the industry as "the Obama factor," has led many gun owners to purchase now in hopes of avoiding more restrictions and regulations later.
"Some people jokingly refer to [President Obama] as the salesman of the year for the industry," Mr. Keane said.
Obama 2.0

Great way to sell guns:). But at the beginning of Obama's election, everyone, including him, assumed he'd be a one term President. If he had it out for gun owners, he'd have already done it. No President can EVER bank on a 2nd term. It's pretty safe to say that what you see is what you get.

Only thing is, Obama's admitted he's anti gun in a reported meeting he had with Brady's group and his buddy Holder has publicly stated he does not believe the 2nd amendment gives private citizens the right to own guns. Dems are now going after guns with an effort to ban magazines holding over ten rounds which is like a crappy California law and affects many types of guns. Got to admit the Prez is a fine gun salesman round these parts. In Texas, you almost have to stand in line to buy one...Mel

Yep, that Brady. Anti gun is anti gun no matter the party. Got to respect him even if he's wrong because unlike some folks, at least he doesn't lie about his position....Mel

The nice thing for dealers, collectors who buy and sell at shows, and the general public is that the POTUS has driven the prices up on used firearms. Helps to make them cost too much for small time thugs. Safer for police and the rest of us. Thanks, Mr President.

Makes me want to run right out and buy a brand new 9MM, and a case of ammo. Maybe another AK too.

At least we're seeing more ammo on the market lately, for a while you couldn't even find the good 5.56, it was all going overseas.

As far as what would obama do in a 2nd term, my guess is if he is not re-elected there will be a flurry of edicts from the chosen one from November to Jan20, making Clinton look like a piker with the pardongate scandal.

Lee, I own a small armory. But the feds are going to use plane mounted ground search radar to find more than my basic hunting and home defense weapons and ammo. War surplus water proof containers are great for burying things. lol

Great word Mel, and much underused.
snark·y (snärk) adj. snark·i·er, snark·i·est Slang 1. Rudely sarcastic or disrespectful; snide. 2. Irritable or short-tempered; irascible. 3. Informal ; unpleasant and scornful [From dialectal snark, to nag, from snark, snork, to snore, snort, from Dutch and Low German snorken, of imitative origin.]
