It looks waxy like jade but the way it broke tells me no. If you break off a little piece it will not be real smooth like an agate break and it will not be shiny or have any glitter to it. If you have a way to do an SG test it will land between 2.92 and 3.4. An agate would scratch it pretty easily also. Kind of hard to tell from looking but it does have a good rind though.
Sorry, not much help Jim

can you determine the hardness of it? try polishing a piece of it with cerium. (won't polish well) then try T/O, should polish if it's jade

That gray green color has me wondering too. Don't think it's jade.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
I'll vote for chrysoprase or whichever silicate is green like that. There are visible conchoidal breaks. Not jade for sure.

Color and red exterior look good for nephrite which rusts on the exterior due to the presence of iron but the fracture looks conchoidal which would be contra-indicative for jade which has sort of a foliated rough ragged fracture. The sort of smooth fracture your piece shows ( going just from my interpretation of your pic) would tend to indicate a quartz mineral like green jasper or chert.....Mel

99% not jade of either type, any colour should have more translucence and the vitruous greasy look isn't there; the most telling factor though is the conchoidal fracture. Neither jade will break like that. The colours in jade can go from red to clear right through the greens and blue, and even orange and purple. Pure jade is allmost clear but "extremely" rare
