When in Quartzsite a few years back, we made a couple of our own "field trips" to some nearby sites. One of these trips took us to nearby Brenda, in search of chalcedony, agates and jaspers. Using one of the gem trails books, we were a few miles to the northwest of Brenda (Plumosa mtns?). I found this rock in a dry creek bed. The original rock was log shaped, about 3" long, by 3" tall by 1 3/4" wide. It was one of the first rocks I cut when I got my saw up and running. I cut the slabs a little too thin to cab, since at the time, I felt they would make for a pretty large cab. I was thinking wind chimes... There were a couple more slabs that have already been used. There are two thicker pieces left that I'll split, now that I have another saw with a thinner blade. I'll probably go ahead and cab them. This stuff is really hard!!! It's probably about 50% moss-green "mossy-plumes", the other 50% a beautiful milky blue/white, with some transparent areas and holes lined with drusy. The question is, is this a moss agate or a plume agate? Thanks for any help. Jean

It's beautiful, and looks like moss to me. I got a little 1" piece of something almost exactly like that in one of my trades... and I wanted to polish it up, so put it in the vibrating tumbler, and it broke. Don't tumble them, they don't hold up very well:(.

Thanks Tammy, Keith and Helen. I was leaning towards moss. I was thrilled when I found it, but it really exceeded my expectations when I cut it open. Tammy, you like? Actually most of the slices have openings with drusy, but it only showed up well in a couple of the photos. So far, I have used one slab (polished both sides with my Ameritool flat lap) to make a windchime for a friend, and another got dropped and broken (ripped out of my hand and flung to the ground when I was trying to polish it!), so I made a smaller, low-domed cab out of it. My husband wrapped that one a while back: Thanks again! Jean

I would also say moss because it is filamentous, rather than feathery or fan-like.

Thanks for the input, Chuck and JR. If I had been looking for this, I probably would not have found it! Jean

Whichever it is, it is lovely. I agree that the druzy is super-lovely. My husband calls just about everything an agate, and he is right most of the time! ;D
