Just got the following from a friend, in case any me be interested.
In order to accommodate rockhounds who still want to hunt on the Woodward Ranch, Jan Woodward has made some further changes to ranch policies: Rock hunting will still be available at Woodward Ranch to guests who are staying in one of the cabins or in an RV site. Reservations are necessary for the cabins and RV sites. The rock shop is still open to the public Thursdays through Saturdays. Rough agate, as well as polished and finished agate is available in the shop, in Grandpa's Magic Garden, and out on the tables in front of the shop. The only thing that has really changed is rock hunting out on the ranch, and that is still available to cabin and RV guests.

When we were there for the Blitz, Jan was very unhappy with rock hunters and rock hunting in general. I'm not surprised by the change. Everything is so far apart in that part of Texas that it makes sense to stay there if you're hounding there.

I am sure Jan is under a lot of stress trying to keep the ranch going without Trey! I am really shocked that Grandpa's Secret Garden is allowed to be hunted! Treys great grandfather stashed all his best finds there many years ago. Trey took me back there one time to show me but informed me it is not for hunting! He gave me a couple of biscuts from the garden and they were really beautiful plumes! I am sure Jan will make decisions on what is best for the ranch. It is still worth every penny to go and experienc every part of the ranch. The peace, beauty, wild life as well as the rock hunting. Sheri

Chuck Regarding your last sentence, were I ever to go there again, I'd stay in Alpine, 16 miles north. I really enjoyed the solitude of being the only RV at the ranch, but I prefer having wifi and a cell phone available. Neither are at the ranch. I do understand that neither have anything to do with rockhounding, but I'm into the "comfort" stage of my life and rockhounding is secondary to that. The ability to do both at the same time is priceless.

Yes, Sheri, the stress was evident. She sold the cattle and some heavy equipment. I think she's just trying to make ends meet. It's very hard for her to do it alone, even with hired hands.

She is also fighting against Trey's family. They wanted to sell off the ranch long ago. I hope Trey was able to leave his power pf say to Jan.

Maybe if she were to have 2 days a year (or more )for a big get together of rock hounds for camping rock swapping , hunting rocks lower the price of the camping for the swap/gathering , if I knew the lady I would mention it to her . You have to respect a woman trying to keep her husbands dream , I believe she maybe going about it wrong ,, just my opinion
