I have a dumb question... after cabbing all day, and thinking I had been pretty careful with my hands... I noticed that my fingernails were worn down. Not just on the tips, but the actual THICKNESS of them. I guess the intelligent answer is to dop, but even with a dop, you end up sticking hands near wheels.
It's one thing to do 1 or 2 cabs like I do at the club, but to do a whole series, as the hours go by, it's easy to get a bit sloppier and not pay attention to where your fingers are.
Do any of you guys wear gloves, apply bandaids first, do something to protect the nail bed, or is this just a hazard of the trade? At the rate I'm going, I won't have any nails, and I don't mean the growing part, I mean down to the base! gaaah.
What do you use??

Occupational hazard. Wait until you grind all the way through the top of a fingernail. Boy does that smart. Dop sticks are the only way to go in my book. It keeps the fingers further away from those cutty/grindy things that cause bleeding and pain.

Oh, is there supposed to be a fingernail on the right index finger? During winter when my fingers crack from the cold, I use those rubber finger tips that Repro(Xerxox) people use, and tape them to my fingers.

Ok... you guys are scaring me! LOL!
I like Jo's response best... and I have the bandaids on now! Going to keep bandaids on my fingers for the rest of my life maybe... the nail on my left index finger is almost gone, right fingernail not as bad... but pretty bad. Thanks for the suggestions:).

Helen, I'm so glad you are having fun with the grinder! I ran into the same thing with the fingers and mine are just at the point of being grown back again. Fabric bandaids are good but I would go right through them and they didn't always work for me. I had to go to dop and have had no problems since. I tried a homemade rig for heating the wax that was pretty useless so invested the money and got a decent station. Definitely worth the price!

Suck it up Helen. We can not be having any nambi pambis on this site. hahaha My polisher does not wear the nail off, it rips it off. So a combination of sticks and practice made it much less frequent. Believe me, the more times you grind them off the more your brain learns exactly where your hand can be. I have not ripped off a fingernail in a long time and even though I have the cab on a stick I still have my fingers on the cab at times. And look at the good side, carpenters do not have it so lucky. They remove the entire finger. Jim

BTW If you have a boo boo on your hand the black latex gloves do a pretty good job of protecting it. Plus those gloves have a rough texture and the grip on a stone is better than with just the fingers. There is no way that anything is going to grab that flimsy latex and suck you into the machine so they are safe to use. They are pretty much a one shot deal but they are real cheap. Jim

I grind them down on insides of my index fingers and outsides of my thumbs (even with dops). I've tried finger cots and they help. Medical tape would also help.

Good advice from all Helen! Here's more. Try not to put your fingers so close. lol Your going to end up losing one from a saw plus ending up with paper thin fingernails all the time. You wanna know how many blade sharperning guys i know missing fingers? All of them! LOL

Other than being careful and using dop sticks, they make a special tape that you use to wrap your fingers. Check at your local lapidary supply. The stuff I buy is green and looks like sticky gauze. Phil

Sacrifice of blood to the grinding wheel gods is but a right of passage. However after you are done cutting your teeth (and fingers) with your new machine you will have to make a decision. That is, wjether to be a dope or a dop LOL I have found that I have developed an increased tollerance of pain. Now I can get down six layers of skin before I really notice anything is going on, and that is only because of all that BLOOD. BTW what is the best way to remove dried blood off of your wheels ? LOL Stu
