We spend summers in SW CO (near Montrose) to get away from the blazing Texas furnace. Does anyone have a recommendation where to focus my rockhounding activities? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

From there to Silverton would be a beautiful drive. Above Silverton there are some old silver mines. We collect every year near an old stamp mill for Silverton Rhodonite. There is some white/black material with pyrite that is very nice too. I can't remember what they call it but like it better than the rhodonite. The rhodonite looks more like rhodochrosite when cabbed. You drive through Ouray on the way up. Both Ouray and Silverton are neat but "touristy" little towns. I've collected a lot in Utah while nearby in Grand Junction. The area is called Sand Flat and accessed through a national park at edge of Grand Junction. You could drive to Yellow Cat from Montrose as well. Right off the I-70. I think there is a rock shop in Montrose. You might get some hints from them. If you are there in August go to the Buena Vista show. It is a must see. Over 100 dealers and "old time Quartzsite" in nature. It isn't far from Montrose just drive to Gunnison, drop down the grade and turn left to Buena Vista. Show is at the rodeo grounds at South end of town.
