I'm heading to Las Vegas at the end of June and I was wondering if anyone new of any close by collecting sites or at least a good rock shop I could visit while I was there.
Anyone?

Southern Utah has quite a few rockhounding sites... Locals may know where to go but I didn't find anything much right around las Vegas.
I drove south toward Kingman, checking out old mine tailing piles up in the hills looking for Turquoise without success but I loved that area especially a town called Chloride

I'm not familiar with any hounding around Vegas itself, but you might hook up with the Vegas gem and mineral society there, they should be able to put you on some rocks. www.sngms.com/If you drive up to So. utah, we can put you on some rocks...

I recall a post a while back where BeffJello went collecting on the banks of the Colorado River and found some cool Pet wood, travertine and some various agates. Keep in mind that Brian has the amazing ability to find awesome material everywhere. :-)

There is supposed to be some nice purple agate outside the valley of fire. When we went to vegas I found this web site but never got to go to collecting, no one else wanted to look for rocks. eduscapes.com/mm/trips/lasvegas/lasvegas.htm

Yeah, Don, I was going to say the Moonlite Bunny Ranch. You could end up on HBO.

Thanks everyone. I look into these suggestions. Purple agate sounds cool. As for the Chicken ranch my wife and daughter are going with me so thats a bad idea. The Bunny Ranch is in Reno which isn't that close to Vegas.
Thanks again anymore suggestions are appreciated.

The purple agate near the Valley of Fire state park (the place were we got married last fall) takes a serious 4 wheel drive to reach. The best of it is still in the seam up on the cliff so its tough to get. I've never found a real good place to hound close to Vegas but have found some agates south and east in washes.
