I can't remember where I heard that you can use sand as grit. Might be losing my mind. If sand is possible, what would be the best kind of sand? Would you use it as the 60/90 stage?

I've tried it. It does work, but takes a long, long time. Yes, you can use is to round things up. Where 60/90 would take a month, sand might take several to do the job. Sand is silica and is about a Mohs 7. If I'm thinking logically, anything harder than a 7 would be little affected. Somebody on here did an experiment and took pics along the way. I'll have to search for it. I'll post it if I can find it. Jo

I wouldnt recommend it at all.Wear and tear on equipment and electricity usage justifies grit use.Sand would be just spinning your wheels,er tumblers.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll stick with store bought grit.

I think the rocks knocking together would do more than the sand.
