Hematite. I have several larger pieces that a friend left with me.

isn't hemmatite magnetic as it is an iron based material? I just posted a large crystal for ID that looks like the same material and it streaks black on a diamond pad, not red, have you tried yours?

Yeah, I thought so too, but my book said Hematite is magnetic if heated. Mine wasn't (and I have one of those ultra strong magnets - didn't even get the slightest pull). Are there maybe some situations where it's not magnetic?
Don't have a diamond pad; could I try streaking on a black of rough quartz?

you could also try a streak test on the back side of a porcelain tile

I tried mine on emery cloth and it just crushed the grit and made a groove in tile that's why I used the diamond scrub pad. Try those and see what it does

As far as I know hematite is non-magnetic. All the magnetic hematite jewelry is man made.

My book said it is supposed to be magnetic when you heat it. Or something. Entirely possible that I misread it!

I THINK they're meteorites. ;-) Looks exactly like all the meteorite pictures on ebay! That MUST be what they are! I'm rich!!! (jk).

I just tried a very strong rare earth magnet on 6 known pieces of hematite. The magnet wouldn't stick to any of them.
A good magnet will stick to an iron meteorite, and most iron nickle meteorites. If it's a nickle iron meteorite, a magnet may or may not stick , depending on the iron content.

Oh, these aren't meteorites, I was just kidding. But good to have the data point about the known hematite -- I'm sure that's what they are. Is there anything cool I can do with them? They're not pretty or valuable, as far as I can tell, but I hate throwing rocks away. I know, I'll throw them in the travelling box and they'll be Dee's or Helen's problem then! :-)
I saw you are having avatar issues -- let me know if you need resizing help or summat.

Hematite is messy stuff to work with, but can make beautiful cabs. Your hands and anything the mud comes in contact with will be stained red for several days.
Any help with posting one of my pics from Photobucket as my avatar would be appreciated.

ok so the black crystal I have is definately not hemmatite then because I flatted and polished two of the surfces and got black residue like I did on the diamond pad. Have you tried rubbing yours yet bluesky? Looking at yor pics again I can see the rust so yours probably are.
