The gravel man dropped off a pile of rocks he needed identified. I was able to identify everything but this rock, which he has a ton of. His gravel pit is in lower Michigan so there isn't much in the way of cool stuff around. This rock is fairly hard and I can not mark it with my knife. Any ideas?

I'd try to polish a window, and see if the dendrites are only on the surface. If they penetrate into the rock, it would be worth trying to cab. If the dendrites disappear when you window it, it's leaverites. Probably a quartz or quartzite pebble.

Dendrites seem to go all the way through. I will see if I can get any shine on it. Sure wish I had a name for it. Scott

I collected some of the same from Lake Superior in Houghton County. I'll have the wife go through my stash and snap a pic. Might be able to id it.

Wow, what a find - that's one cool rock, even if it only takes a satin shine - nice! If you get more I'd love to buy a hunk if you're up to dealing with the post office.

I will check with the guy to see if I can go to the pit and grab some to spread around. It would be cool to see how others work them. Give me until after the fourth and I should have some time. Scott
