I am now an official owner of a Star Diamond 10" Gravity Feed Saw!!!!! I'm in a bit of euphoria so please excuse all of the exclamation points, lol!!! My friend Justin (Juzwuz) has been trying to help me get a homemade 8" saw ready for me. He found this on Craigslist today and the great guy that he is, said I should check it out. I did and then almost fainted! It was funny because when I got there the seller and I both pointed at each other and said "Hey, I know you!" Turns out we both worked together at the March Club Show. We just didn't know each other's names. The saw is in great condition including the blade. It has a gravity feed and the plastic hood. He also threw in some additive for water from Jerry's Rock Shop but the label is blurred out. He couldn't remember the name of the stuff or how much to use so I will have to call the shop to ask. Before I show you the saw pictures you just have to see his coolest pet ever! I can't remember her super long name but she is an African Desert Sulcata Tortoise. She is 13 years old and the friendliest thing. Patrick and I were standing in the driveway admiring all of the rocks and he said "Check out this HUGE cool rock over here!" He stepped into the shallow fenced yard and that "big" rock started walking towards him, LOL! She walked right up to him! He told us that he is a 7 minute walk from the grocery store but he takes her on her walk and it takes an hour and a half. He guides her with gentle nudges. He said that awhile ago he was walking her and he heard a loud voice behind him saying "You know that Bellevue has a leash law!" He turned around and two police officers were sitting in their car rolling in laughter. They drove away, lol! Ok........ super COOL pet aside...... check out my saw!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, that's the best story I've heard in a while. Congrats on your new baby. The blade looks in decent shape too. Happy Birthday! Jo

time to get it dirty.
looks like a good 1st saw, but remember you can have more than one! when it is time for a new blade get a 303c,
do you have some rough that will be easy to clamp up? ... like a block?

Got that thing dirty yet ? The vice guide and the blade guard look just like the old Star Diamond saws, except the vice was on the left on the Star Diamond. And a divers weight for the weight feed too. Now you're going first class girl. No more showers from the tile saw.

I do as a matter of fact! Got a Blue Ice Polka Dot that is mostly brick size. Should that be what I start with? Any tips? I'm pretty excited.... can you tell!!! ;D

Jerry's closed an hour before I brought this home. I need to know how much water to put in and additive?

Polka dot cuts pretty well. As long as the brick is not over 3" tall. Don't want to strain the blade till you get a feel for the saw.
You could start by dressing the blade just in case. Maybe cit a small piece of grinding stone or fire brick - or even obsidian. then do the polka dot.
you could likely just mix a few oz to the gallon. maybe see if you can find the ratio for lube cool or one of the other addatives. I used to just add a little detergent type grease cutter to the water. For a few cuts it will not be critical.

What a fantastic birthday gift!!!! You are going to have a ton of fun with that:).
What a NEAT turtle!!! We have turtles around here, but they don't get that big. Turtles are such interesting creatures, never heard of anyone keeping one as a pet and WALKING it?!

Lube Cool is 10:1 as I recall. extra coolant in your water won't hurt a thing, better than not enough The bottom of the blade should be about 1/4 inch submerged into the coolant. You will need to add a little from timt to time, watch for a nice spray and a steady drip from the blade guard. I like the vice setup on those saws, they don't ride up the blade and bind up like a lot of others. If you're going to use water be sure to either cut a piece of obsidian or grindstone every 3 rocks or so to keep the blade nice and sharp. Clean the mud out of the sump regularly or the mud will take the place of cooling water and your blade will run too hot and tend to glaze over the diamond. Have fun and show us what you cut.

What a neat Birthday gift. You only want the water and additive just above the diamond on the blade, at least that is what I was told, as far as the additive, I only use about 1 tablespoon to a quart of water. As far as what or how to use your new saw. Besides cutting brick style rocks, you can also glue smaller rocks that you want slabbed on board ends, like 1x1 or 2x2, these can then be clamped into your vice. Good luck and congrats. Tammy I am sure that if I have anything incorrect, that there are plenty of people on here that will steer you in the right direction.

Most of the water soluble coolants are 10:1 or 20:1. 10:1 couldn't hurt. Star Diamond saw had the right side vise many years ago and then switched to left side. Barranca continued to make the newer version but I don't think too many parts fit the right side vise unit.

Happy birthday! You are going to love the blue ice. Kathy, and I dug out some very nice blue ice at the Polka Dot claim last month. I run the coolant as deep as possible and not get a bath. Hard to use too much, easy to use too little. Woody

I found out the additive I got is called Crystal Cut and it is supposed to be 1 oz per gallon. I'm still trying to figure out where to set this up, I guess the picnic table in the back yard for now.
Thanks for the tip Daniel on dressing the blade! I have a little over 50lbs of Obsidian. I'll start with that. They aren't brick shaped but I'm sure I can figure it out.
Lol, I spent all morning pouring through every saw thread I could find. I'm anxious to go outside and play but it's rainy and only 56 degrees right now. I think WA is the only place in the country that isn't experiencing a heat wave right now....

Krystee, maybe you can get a little more mileage out of your birthday and get the family to build you a saw table like Randy has.
