AKA Beach Glass. My favourite nephew is getting married 4 August, and his wife to be is doing the reception decorating...which will be at our beach cabin. Short story long, part of the decoration is to be beach glass, which she was about to buy. (costly) Knowing the company here in Washington makes the 'beach glass' they sell, I decided to make what is needed for the party decorations. Having a large bin full of bottles from the 1800's I cut, and broke them up, loaded all the tumbler barrels, and here is the result..Beach Glass! The 'ring' came up on my finger when I grabbed a hand full out of the barrel. Some of the pictures are shot wet, all the glass is nicely sanded. Woody The first batch, two 12 pound barrels worth A wee bit closer Closer still The 'ring'

Love all the different colors Woody. Good for you! When I find glass out hiking or hounding, I take it home and put it in my tumbler. Helps clean up the environment and repurposes something that could cut my dog's paw. I also break up bottles when they're empty that have a particularly pretty color. One thing, you can always tell tumbler glass from beach glass 'cause they don't have all the wonderful imperfections put in by nature that beach glass has. Congratulations on the wedding!!! Jo

Jo: If you toss a hand full of sharp rocks in the tumbler for the last hour, the tumbled glass looks just like beach glass. Woody

Tumbling glass to 'beach glass' stage takes only a few days, using only 46/70 grit, but is the same process as doing rock. If you follow Krystee's tutorial for doing obsidian, then you would get bright shiny glass bits like her obsidian. Woody

I was just thinking about this the other day for use in our aquarium. The other day. Seeing your colorful tumbles I want to try myself. Our 55 gallon cracked from old age (huge mess to wake up too) and we need new substrate. Is new glass and old glass both safe to use with tanks? Sorry I hijacked the thread.

Hi Matt, Here's a link to one of the previous posts on glass tumbling forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=print&thread=4239If you are searching for old info posted on RTH, the search function on RTH is not the best tool for the job. What I do is a Google search, using the URL for this site, and then add what you are searching for, like this: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/ tumbled sea glass Google's massive search engines will then look through everything that's in the archives here. Hope you find the one you're looking for. Jean

No but my Ultra-vibe 18 will have an opening in about 2 days. I'm going to give it a try.

Awesome! I never really thought of that. I find old bottles when out in the field. And you hope for the best but find more broken ones than good ones. I now have to kick my self in the arse, for throwing all that deep purple glass back down. You can bet it wont happen again. Nice work!

I'm going to try a small test batch of new bottles when a tumbler opens up. After thinking about ideas for finding glass, I realized I have access to a lot of colors. My weekend gig is Djing for a few of the clubs in the area. They go through a lot of glass Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards

Nice glass! I am saving up old glass to run a tumble sometime. riverrock, I use glass as filler in both my rotary and vibe. I got some tempered glass shelves that were being scrapped. I bust them in a bag and they shatter down to perfectly sized filler with no dangerous/sharp shards. They last longer than I thought they would, and a lot cheaper than ceramic. Bill

Anyone that wants to use glass as a filler,go to a glass place that replaces auto windshields and windows, they usually have a shop vac full of pieces.I got a couple gallons and used that for quite a while.

'old glass' message keeps coming up for tumbling. Is today's glass ok? I have endless access to liquor bottles like crazy. I'm picking some coluful ones this week to try. I could probably get enough to ship cleaned and broken to members.
