I had a chunk of this material on hand.Awhile back I posted an end cut that I had tumbled.I slabbed the rest of it and just took it out of the Lot-o. The one I did before is on top. These are the slabbettes in the load for smalls. The banded jasper shows silver when it's at an angle, and dark at another angle.Different,though. snuffy

That stuff is awesome. Is that similar to BIFs?

That stuff is awesome. Is that similar to BIFs? John,I'm not sure if this stuff is maybe BIF. morsefire on here showed some pics of the bif he found and it looked almost the same. This is a very heavy hematite loaded rock.South African jasper was what it was labeled at the rock shop, thats what I'm going by. snuffy

The layered mixture of Jasper and haematite (BIF) is fairly common over here in Western Australia (we were once joined to SA) and also around the Great lakes in N America, it is known commercially as Jaspilite .... tiger iron and marra mamba tiger eye belong to the same group but they both have bands of crocidolite (blue asbestos) included in the mix, the beds can be hundreds of metres thick.
Take care.
