What is the best way to get rough slabs for tumbling if you do not have a saw. Should I search on Ebay? Wait till I can get a saw? In a rhyolite rock box that I purchased on Ebay, I received a couple small slabs that are turning out wonderfully and I'm hoping that I can try my hands out on wire wrapping. Do some of you buy slabs and then break them up to smaller pieces for tumbling? Thanks

You could certainly buy slabs and bust them up but those would be some very expensive tumbled stones. If you can get a cheap trim saw then at least you can cut the slabs into shapes so that after tumbling they can be used for keychains or necklaces with glue on bails. I have a hard time feeding my barrels with the price of rough stones, I could not imagine the cost of filling barrels with purchased slabs.

I really would like to try my hands at wire wrapping, but without a saw right now, I'm thinking about just buying some slabs and tumbling them. I'm sure in the future I'll have all the equipment to do everything myself, but until then I'll have to improvise. I'll be looking for member slabs!!! Thanks

Most of us have bought slabs. E-bay and rock shops have material that we can't find ourselves or that we just want. Buy a cheap tile saw and cut the shapes you want then tumble them. They will be great for wire wrapping.
Just breaking and tumbling will result in loss of a lot of good material.
Mostly have fun

Only the smallest little slabs would be ready for tumbling and then wrapping. You would have to break up larger slabs. ... and like folks said, a tile saw is so cheap, it does not make sense to break the slabs.

Great news. I really wasn't thinking about the fact that my wife works at Ace Hardware and they rent (2) different tile saws. DUH!! I don't believe that they are very large in size, but I could buy the slabs like everyone has said and then cut them into smaller/better sizes and shapes before going into the tumbler.

Several of us sell or swap slabs so if you are looking for slabs, it's worth letting us know what materials you seek.
P.S. Check out Jim's post. I have dealt with him before, and I think you will be pleased!!!

I have a bunch of slabs that are not rejects but you probably can not sell the cabs from them for a very high price. A lot of it is already one cab slabs that just need trimmed up or tumbled as they are. If you are interested I will send a small sample box and all I will charge you is the postage plus ten bucks. If they are going to be broken or cut up I do not need to pack them real good and I can get a lot more in a box.
I think you will like what I have to offer and you will not find a better price anywhere. I can get a lot of slabs in a sfrb and the postage is just a little over six bucks with tracking.
Message me if you would like a box. Jim
