Well its due time for a trip to the cabin for a couple days. After falling madly in love with tumbling we are going to hit the river beds, wash outs and rock slides in the area. Our cabin is located in the Stiliguamish river, home to some great jade finds from what we have read. Sadly we are on the South fork closer to Granite Falls. In the past i have just panned on our property and have found placer gold and crappy garners. Its fun and all but we are excited to rock hound this time. Being so new to understanding rock identification we ate going to try and look for agates and all things green, red lol and take it home with us. I understand jade finds trend to have times on then covering the jade. We are going to bring a battery powered dremel along so we don't break then up. Unfortunately jade seems to be found more on the north fork odd the Stilli near Darington, but you never know. If nobody is looking thus side of the river we may just find some Wish us luck and I'll be back most likely with my next post asking for rock identifying help You guys are the best. I also have a heavy pick update coming of or work space conversion to tumbling and lapidary. Thanks again to everyone for being so welcoming and helpful. Matt Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards

hahaha When I started hounding I did the same thing. When I finally learned which rock was nephrite I went through my green pile and picked out a bunch of it. In time you will be able to tell by just picking it up and feeling the weight. (well, not always) But if you start finding it you will soon be able to tell by weight, feel and sight.
Good luck Jim

Hi Matt!!! OH BOY!!! Fun times! Here's a picture of the jade common near your area. This is from the Nooksak river, a little north of where you are, near Bellingham. Have a GREAT time, can't wait to see your pictures! LOVE seeing local stuff!!! ps These are broken pieces off a small boulder. Hopefully you can see from the pictures, the local Jade has a waxy look where it breaks off from the mother rock.

Those are very cool pics Tntmom. I don't have a full update yet as planned. We did go to the cabin over the weekend and I did go hounding up the hills around the ranger station and on the river beds. I love our home away from home but sadly we don't really get much (from what I know of) on the south fork of the Stili River. Most the jade, garnets and gold nuggets are over on the N fork near between Monte Cristo and Darington where there were different formation changes in our good old earth.
I am hoping that I may have found something. When poking around and digging I found an easy spot to dig where a tree had fallen. I dug around the trunk base where it had broken up and was only find green rock with very little other colors. I wish I wasn't writing so elementary right now and wish I could identify rocks better. I know it will happen in due time, experience from hounding and the great members on this board.
I will have pics up shortly when I get the rock all cleaned up and scratched with a knife. (I heard that's what you can do with softer jade)
It was just a strange experience only finding green rocks in this spot. They were in various shades of green. Some really bright small stuff that was broken up similar to the pics above. The other thing I read about and this is what got me more excited was a lot of Jade will have rinds around it. I found a few good size ones and hoping to get those cleaned and revealed asap.
My next post on this thread will most likely read.
"Please help identifying all these green rocks" lol With pics of course.
Cheers, Matt
