The hardest events for me are the shooting events.
I see shooting events as the basic right of all Americans. We have more guns than anyone else and should know how to use them better than anyone else. Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill must be rolling over in their graves. Why are we so incompetent?
Are all American gun owners spoiled and coddled and afraid to put in a litlle effort to learn how to shoot as good as people from around the world?
Shooting a gun does not require you to be buff and physically fit like the other events. Shooting a gun is like shooting pool and throwing darts. A little hand-to-eye and anyone can master it.
The archery events are just as bad. We have these great archery rigs that are oodles better than the simple curved and recurved instruments of my youth. Any sportsman can afford a rig in the USA and we lose these events too
Just a little rant...nevermind

I agree with you charlie. But I really don't really think you can even call them a sport anymore. Those are not real guns and bows. Could you see anyone really using them in the bush for hunting!! Its a joke. Like the all of the events. Like what do they really prove or accomplish? The way I see it us taxpayers fund these athletes, but for what. So a few gold metal winners can get rich from endorsements. Do they thank us tax payers back with there new found wealth? No!!!! But your and my governments give them a tax break for there metals. What a joke!!!!!

Both shooting and archery to me have been spoiled by all the technology. I used to shoot competition but when it became a war of who could afford the most technological advanced gun, cartridge or sighting device, it ceased to be as fun, so now I shoot just for fun. Got to say though Charlie, you're dead wrong on the physical aspect of shooting. It takes remarkable control of body and mind to be really good and you really notice that if you continue shooting as you become older.
That being said my old gun club had some Olympic shooters and my current one has some too. Shooting whether with bow or gun is a very psychological sport and on any given day or on any given shot the best shooter in the world can be off. In a way, that kind of makes it more fun as the most experienced, skilled shooter does not always win. The tiniest bit of wind at the wrong time, being slightly off in your breathing or even heartbeat or concentration and you can make a bad shot.
I actually think the US does pretty well and just to be good enough to qualify for the games from a country with a huge number of shooters is remarkable. You ever shot with any of those guys Charlie? I've actually shot next to a couple of guys who qualified and man they are something else. Way the heck and gone better than the average American shooter and a lot of Americans shoot pretty well. I'm more of a purist though, and their guns are super high tech and to me not real interesting...Mel

I agree with Mel about what he said about physical conditioning and shooting. Any of you marines out there will I'm sure remember "grass week" LOL It was a phase of boot camp preceding the rifle range. Mind you by this time you have already been through a lot of physical conditioning so you would have thought that what ever part of your body could hurt already had. WRONG You hurt in places on your body that you didn't even know that you had. LOL Stu

I used to shoot competition but when it became a war of who could afford the most technological advanced gun, cartridge or sighting device, it ceased to be as fun I can relate to that one Mel, I was a cycling fanatic as a teen and into my twenties. My idols included Francesco Moser, Bernard Hinault and of course my hero Greg LeMonde, the problem, I could not stop upgrading my bike with the latest, greatest components to keep up. Pfheah. I gave up and bought a mountain bike and haven't done much but new pedals and shifters, and I still ride it! Plus road biking is so dangerous, I know too many guys that have been F'ed with on the road. Sorry Charlie, a little off topic I guess. ;D
