Has anybody ever been to the dog pound and one particular doggie (or kitty) just managed to communicate to you that it needed to adopt you? Yeah, me too, and that's why I NEVER go window shopping at the SPCA any more; I would have hundreds of pets then. Anyway, on ebay this afternoon, this rock reached out through my computer screen and said "I may not be that pretty on the outside, but I'll be pretty if you spruce me up a bit, I will!" So I bid my 99 cents and nobody else wanted it. Hella shipping, but who cares? Shipping is just a new form of tax. :-) Anyway, any thoughts? Seller seems to have no idea either. www.ebay.com/itm/261076958996?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649(And I'm still all happy, so no fair saying anything like "Oh, that seller screwed me over" or "look at all the cracks".)

You can do the specific gravity test to see if it's jade. Looks cool though. No matter what, it will be fun slabbing it. Scott

Yeah, I'll have to create the little setup that you (or whoever it was) described.

It definitely shows promise. There could be some awesome color in there. Jim

I think these are my favorite kinds of purchases/finds -- ones where you take a chance on something. Of course it's the most fun when you cut them and they turn out awesome -- but that is more fun that one which was obvious would be awesome.

As long as it isn't filled with fractures, it's killer material. Slam dunk pucrhase.

Didn't see this earlier but that's going to be interesting inside one way or another:)!

Or a third way Helen. It does not look like Jade or Jasper to me. I would rather think of agate.

Surprises are the best best. I now pick up all the ugliest rocks just to see what is inside and some are awesome. The others are "what the heck, it was fun to find out". Here is an example. Jim

I just looked that stone over again and if I found it I would go straight home to cut it up. It looks like black healed fractures in the upper right corner that could be very interesting to say the least. I am excited about it and it isn't even my rock. lol Jim

Ok, so the ugly duckling arrived in the mail. To tell the truth, it looks like quartz. The yellowish quartz is in a thick seam that is 90% of the width of the rock. There are two thin bands of green, about 1/4" thick, looks like, along the top and bottom of the rock. The transition from green to yellowish is gradual rather than sudden. I'm going to cut it next time I'm at the shop, but not expecting much. :/
Oh, and it doesn't feel waxy. I didn't to a sg test.

Looks to be a little macrocrystalline so I'd guess massive quartz too with either included copper or nickel salts. Used to find similar material on some of the mine dumps up in the gold country....Mel

Yeah. Maybe I'll try to slab off the green parts.

Gonna cut it on Saturday, right down the middle (crosswise to the green endcaps). Not expecting much.

Well, I was hosing off and looking at my rocks from the Panoche Hills this morning, and guess what I found. Another one, exactly like this one! It could be its twin brother. So now I have a pretty good guess what will be inside, not as ugly as I thought. Will take pics and post.

How incredible is that. Life's twists and turns brings you around to buying one identical to the one you did not remember you have. Any other person on the planet could have bought that stone but it ended up in your hands. Wonders never cease. Looking forward to seeing how this saga ends. Jim

Yeah, I have some cosmic connection to that area . . . you know how Kris has a rockhounding website? Well, before going with them to Panoche Hills, I was looking at old posts from people who had been there with him previously. What do I see? A picture of a rock I had bought on ebay like two weeks earlier! The seller had gone rockhounding with Kris, posted his rock on ebay, and I bought it! Seller had used the same photo, so it was pretty obvious (the rock was a memorable shape). I was gobsmacked.
editied to add, I guess I should make sure to cut BOTH of them tomorrow so we can compare the inside too.
