I don't know if it is allowed on this board but I am just getting into tumbling and going to start small(as i should) with a lortone 3a tumbler and was needing to know of some good places to get rough stones for tumbling for the best prices. Also any advice for someone new to the game would be great. I had a rock tumbler as a child but wasn't into it much but now I am. lol I'll be purchasing equipment and supplies within the next week or two. So any help is appreciated.

Welcome,
Where are you? The most satisfying rough is that which you find yourself.

I am in southern indiana. Totally clueless if there are any good places to hunt around here. I live in the middle of corn fields and gravel roads. (gravel not good for tumbling lol)

Rockshed is as honest as you'll ever find, I've been dealing with him for 8 years. His shipping is fast, prices are good and he always sends a little bag of candy ;D

Do a Google search for Indiana rock shops. I've never been in a real rock shop where the owner wasn't more than glad to give local collecting advice. Also ask about local rock clubs. Then be sure to buy a couple of pounds of grit or a bit of polish from them. If all goes well you'll be a repeat customer.

We live in flat land Illinois right next to you. Last summer we started doing gravel pits. We find stuff from up north pushed down from the big ice. Not a lot and most all ready ground to marble size but we have found golf and baseball size. We also walk the deep gully creeks running into the rivers. The water has washed down through the glaciers loess or sediment leaving the gravel that might have whatever it pushed along. This spring we went up and walked Lake Superior beaches, and other than a million flies it looked a lot like a deep gravel pit, little bit of everything. Most of what the grandkids find gets dropped back on a gravel road when there not around, but they have found Jaspers and Agates in the pits and creeks. Bigger glacier rocks work there way up in the farmers fields. Most have a spot they dump them in and over the years they can get a good pile to go through. When the grandkids talked me into to this I thought all was lost living in the middle of cornfield land. But with a little walking and learning from this site we are finding them rocks. Now when ever they go anywhere on vacation or trip they bring home a bag of rocks. Drives there gram-ma nuts all these buckets of rocks sitting around in the garage lol.

Rock Shed is a great source but save up a few more dollars for a double 3 lb. unit. You will be glad.

I understand about the kids, I have always collected rocks and my 16yr old has as well. Rocks to be found all over the place. Some nice and some ordinary but all with a memory attached. Hopefully we can find places where we can actually hunt for them instead of just finding on by accident. If not, its still good. I actually can't wait to get my new tumbler and start. Speaking of that are Lortone tumblers any good? The one I had as a kid was like from toys-r-us or something, and ungodly loud. I hope that aspect has changed a little. If not, someone please warn me! lol ;D Even if it hasn't changed I'm still getting a tumbler.

Yep, the science fair tumbler is still available, and still loud. You can polish 10 pebbles one half the size of a marble in about 2 years. ;D
