I heard good & bad things about using Karo syrup to help increase grit through the rough. I did a 2nd course of 60/90 on agates and jasper and added 2 tablespoons of Karo to a 12# barrel. 15mins went by and I heard it spraying out of one of them. I didn't think I used that much Karo. I put Karo in the other 12 and the 2 8 pounders and i'm scared to death I just wasted all the grit if they blow too. The 8# only has about 1tablepoon. With river rock rose quartz and citrine. Can't see how Karo syrup could increase grit. What a sticky mess! Good luck with the other tumblers. Save the Karo for making caramels : ) Hope the others with less karo works. Let us know.

I made the same mistake once. The barrel probably exhausted sulfur dioxide from the syrup, but eventually the CO2 produced by fermentation would have made it explode anyway. Wait til you get a whiff of that! (makes no difference how much syrup you use either) Whoever first suggested that recipe was probably getting their tumbler confused with their still.

Yeah, I won't be trying it again. I love trying out different ideas, but as new as I am to tumbling I really just need to stick to the books and RTH. Although the Karo idea was from a rock shop and thought I would give it a try lol

Karo is a suggestion to use in the final stages of apache tears to keep them from tumbling into each other so hard and chipping or cracking. That is the only use I have heard of it in tumbling. Supposed to slow them down enough so they don't break each other.

The first thing you need to know is to ignore the instructions that come with tumblers and grit, and I'd be leery of whatever it might say in a book or some (other) website too. My advice is to just stick with the tutorials at the top of the list of threads in this forum.
There is no way to stop Karo syrup or sugar or any other organic "thickener" from fermenting in the tumbler. You might finish a stage before the barrel explodes, but the stench of the slurry will choke a horse and you won't make that mistake again. Trust me on that. ;D

You're not in the boat alone! Many of us,including myself,have tried all sorts of different things to either speed up or slow down tumbling action and have ended up with less then better end results. I once put un-cooked rice with HOT water in a 6 pound Lortone that had Apache Tears in it,,,just before I left for work. When I got home from work I found the cover from the barrel about 12 feet away from the tumbler and the only reason it stopped there is because it hit the wall!Rice and Tears EVERYWHERE too!
Good luck and as has already be said,,,,stick to our tutorials and you'll do fine.

Oh my, rice would have been a mess to clean up. After some more thought I don't think it was a gas build up. It happened just after 15 minuets. I never heard of barrel lids popping off until after I posted this. I think it was just that. A member suggested I put a pan under the tumbler to save grit when it happens and that's a perfect idea and solution to help salvage a possible future mishap.
I can't wait to turn my question threads into polished picture threads. ;D
