Howdy folks, Well, been trying to take advantage of the cooler weather and spending a lot of time in the shop. Having to fight off the annual scorpion invasion but a little application of Viper RTU seems to have slowed the boogers down a bit. Anyway, here are a few I cut today. Thanks for looking....Mel Kind of a crappy 30 X 40mm Rio Grande jasper/agate, another glue salvage job. A Woodward Ranch red, white and black plume I collected on one of my trips out there. It took a great polish but sadly, as is often the case with these, you get little white spots where the saw cuts across the tips of plumes. I glued them so they're not pits but the spots still show. 35 X 45mm In transmitted light to show off the plumes: Mr. Scorpion likes the dino bone cab I salvaged by recutting the one I broke the other day. The cab minus the critter. 22 X 31mm

nice cabs....................ha scorpions !.......ha baby rattlers !.........we have mosquitos here that will suck 'em dry !! lol lol..............not really.......i find it interesting how folks in various parts of the same country have vastly different issues to deal with.......likely the biggest pest in this part of Ohio is the very hearty orange barrel !!!..........

Hey Mel,
Stop showing off!
Most people use coins to show scale!
(Man, you would find the one use for dead scorpions I forgot to list...)

*L* Thought that might tickle you Lowell. This particular individual was in my walk in clothes closet this morning. That's the reason why one always shakes out his clothes, towels, and shoes before use. For some reason scorpions love the clothes hamper too. Not unusual to find a big one in the bottom after sorting your laundry. We have few recluse spiders too which is the main reason I spray. I don't like them much and they love clothes too. Kind of like the scorpions as it kind of keeps you on your toes and makes life a little more interesting.....Mel

Mel it is great to see some of your work. Seems like awhile since you have posted any cabs you cut. In the past I have tossed some of my "vuggy" cabs in an ultra-sonic cleaner after my 280 wheel. I then will apply super glue or hotstuff until the vugs are full ( sometimes this takes a couple of applications and several days), and then go back to the 280 to even things out. This has helped for me to keep the polishing compound out of there.

Chris: Yeah, actually, the white spots you see on the plume cab are not polishing compound. The saw cut through a bunch of white plumes with black centers and that's the white you see. The white stuff coated the black plumes. If you look at the bottom of the cab, you can see some of the white plumes still buried in the chalcedony. This sort of plume shows up often at Marfa but I've only seen it a couple of times from Woodward. The plumes did have tiny hollows which would have been pits but those I sealed with super glue before I went to the 280 wheel. I wish the white areas were not there but sometimes you gets what you gets. *S*
Porky: Yep, the scorpions glow sort of a yellow green under a black light....Mel

Nice cabs! I just can't get enough of the really saturated colors in some of these rocks, thanks for sharing.

"In transmitted light"
You are such a geek Mel!! (a compliment).
I like the dino bone too. Somebody ought to tell the plume agates to grow in 1/4" layers, separated by 1/4" of clear agate. ;-)

Susan, *L* Alas , you have found me out. I am indeed the king of geeks *L*.
I've often thought that about plume too. Once in awhile you'll get one with nice floating plume and no voids or pits but, in Woodward Plume especially, the plume often seems to kind of wrap around the biscuit with the best plume being parallel to the top and bottom edges, or in pockets around a crystal vug. Makes the darn things very problematic to cab. I kind of see them as looking at rocks, rather than jewelry stones. I cut quite a few and never get tired of holding them up to the light and looking at the cool plumes. Oh heck, I'll admit it, this geek can sit on the porch all day squirting rocks and just lookin at them *L*...Mel

I like your cabs, Mel, esp the dino! For some reason I couldn't see the scorpion, not that I am disappointed!
