was told of this forum by friend from two other forums, aside from a lot of good discussion was also told there are folks on here that are good at identifying jaspers and agates. what I have comes from a collection of a now departed rockhound who loved to travel out west a lot, most likely hit the Tucson show many times (as the batch I inherited had a bit of tiger's and hawk's eye). Tried to get this slab of material ID'd on another forum to know avail, so thought I would try here: front and back of the same slab - the grey areas that run through it actually have a silver sparkle. so any thoughts? regardless, looking forward to participating and learning on this board! James

Welcome aboard James;
I have no idea which variety of jasper you have, but I have a big hunk of it that was passed on to me by another rockhound who's digging in that big honey hole in the sky. There are a few on here who should be able to ID it. I'll be watching for their answer too.

Silvery sparkles? You mean it looks metallic, or it contains little flecks that sparkle like glitter? Are the dark areas transparent, or metallic grey/black? It looks like jasper and hematite to me. Something like Mary Ellen Jasper.

I will throw this out (and thanks for the welcome Jake) - the "suspicion" was it might be British Columbia jasper, but they could not say with any degree of certainty. Hoping someone on here knows something more definitive!
as time goes will be posting pics of sodalite, laboradorite, chrysocolla, and tiger eye cabs that I get around to making out of this load - the old man apparently got around in his day, my gratitude to his family who passed it along.
Daniel - reminds me of metallic paint - very minute sparkles, not like micah - not transparent either.

Hi James! Your jasper looks nearly identical to a chunk that's sitting in my "slab today" pile. We collected it in the Panoche Hills of Central California. The silvery metallic glints are hematite or magnetite, iron oxides. Much of what we collect has bright red cinnabar stained agate spiderweb, too. Enjoy cutting it, and if you need more, drop us a note!
Best regards, Kris Hand-2-Mouth Mining

Yeah, those orbicular type jasper specimens ( actually some say chert) are found in marine Franciscan formation rocks all up and down the west coast and also in the Sierras of California. A similar orbicular jasper comes from the Iron Ranges of Minnesota and Cave Creek, Arizona too. The metallic stuff is, as Kris has said, often hematite or other iron ores....Mel

;D Hey, Doc!!! Very glad to see you here! Looking forward to your participation on the forum!!
Not sure what kind of slab you have but it's a gorgeous color!! Maybe some type of orbicular jasper? The pattern in some areas of the slab looks similar to some poppy jasper I cabbed a while back.
