I had a small piece of agate that I suspected might be iris (rainbow) agate, so I checked it out. Here's what I got. The lot, minus the one I polished for a key chain piece. Looks like nothing, right? A few pics of the polished piece. These are all the same piece, just held up a little differently to cfl bulb in the kitchen. Every piece in the above lot has the iris band like this, but not noticeable until polished. Note how the color changes, depending on how you hold it up to the light. Taped to some black paper with a hole cut in it:

Nice iris. There was a dealer in Canby last weekend with a bunch of Montana agate iris, beautiful and quite spendy stuff.

Kewl!!! Congrats!!!! Those are great pix!!!! And really helpful too!!
I think I just found a piece of iris too!!! I'm not 100% sure... but I had a piece of sort of bland looking clear agate that I had not polished, but I had put a coat of epoxy on (for lazy polish), and happened to pick it up in low light when rearranging my display box. AND IT GLOWED PINK!!! So I picked it up and started turning it around. It was neither polished nor wet... just had epoxy on the one side and unpolished on the other.
So I threw it in the tumbler and have fingers crossed that it will actually be a rainbow when it comes out! I'm so excited!!! And no other clear piece did this (I checked them all), except vaguely... that is, they had a few thin bands that looked like your 2nd pix, glowed yellowish or pinkish but not your first (with the full rainbow). Gaah... now I'm dying for this tumbler batch to finish!!!

Clyde, I will be at the Clackamette show, most likely on Saturday. I'll be sure to wear my RTH t-shirt. The iris shows the best if you polish both sides and slice thin.
