I just gt my shipment of 46/70 & 120/220 from the rock shed along with a pound each of Spotted Sodalite & Labradorite. Just put the Lab into one barrel and sent it off on it's way,....
I was sooo happy to be tumbling again that I forgot the pics but I will be checking it tomorrow to see how its moving along so I will post some pics then!!
And as soon as my other barrel frees up then I start my Sodalite!!
Time to bust out the old Twisted Sister... 'I wanna Rock !!!'

You didn't start those in the 46/70 did you?

Labradorite is a tough tumble. I think its hardness is a 5.5, or 6 so watch the course grit in the early stages. It also tends to be brittle and chip. You will want lots of pellets for cushion in the final stages.

be careful with the sodalite it runs between a 5 and 6 on the mohs scale too and can also be a difficult tumble.

I didn't run the Sodalite yet.... Yes, the Labradorite is in the 46/70, and I am checking it every 2 days to see how it does. will change to 120/220 as soon as some of the edges round.
Is 46/70 too rough for Labradorite & Sodalite??
Would I be better off just using the 120/220 to start??? I tried to look up info on tumbling it but didn't find anything more than generic info and no mention of grits to use.... I even looked at the tumbling labradorite message here and no mention of grit, just that it can be a problem to tumble. This is my first time tumbling fractured Lab, my last one was a whole rock.

I just got through running a sodalite batch in 60/90 for 5 days in a lortone 45c.It certainly did round them! If I did it again,I'd probably try the 200 grit as a first run to avoid losing as much mass.I dont use 120 or I'd use it.Knew there was a reason I didnt mess with the softer stones anymore.

I start with 60/90 for most rock. I would be very careful to get your rock out of the 46/70 and into the 120/220 (I'd skip the 60/90 in this case) before you lose too much volume. Follow the Rock Shed's instructions for pre-polishing the Labradorite. I'd do it the same way with the Sodalite too.

I ran it 2 days in the 46/70 to knock off the rougher edges on some of it and then into the 120/220... will check it after about 4 days to see how its progressing and make a decision then. In the meanwhile, I'll look into the rock sheds info about tumbling lab & Sodalite. Thanx for the heads up!! mario

I found this while surfing the rock shed website, at least I think that's where I got it..... Labradorite Just as a suggestion, you may get a better polish if you add an additional step to your tumbling process by adding a 1000 Aluminum Oxide grit between the pre-polish and polish stages. MOHS hardness scale of 6
I use 1000 AO for my polish currently... If I use it as a between pre - polish & polish.... what do I use for a Polish?
I'm just now going to start the pre-polish with my 500 AO and I have no problem moving on to the AO polish I have now... that'll keep me going for another week as I plan to really let them go in each stage instead of just 2 days as it says in the papers I got from the rock shed, which I figure is the basics for new tumblers, and I really want to try to get better at this. So any advise is always welcome... thanks in advance Mario

soooo, i just now saw that they sell a 1000 AO and a AO polish <banging head against Lg Agate>
Is there any other polished to be recommended for labradorite or Sodalite as that is my next tumbling project?
