my girl and i decided to look for some jade today. We came across two rocks that i thought might be jade. they had the tink instead of the clunk and they were heavy. The first 3 pics are of a rock my girl found. The top inch and a half was uncovered and in a pool on a river in NorCal. The green tip which was worn smooth is hard. I tried scratching it with a pair on needlenose pliars and i could not, the metal came off on the rock. When I tried scratching it a bit down the rock where it was buried in sand I could scratch it. This stone shows what looks to me like the iron oxide vulcan lines along it. I have read about jade having a outer layer of serpantine. This rock also looks like it has a small vein of gold running along it. I do not think it is visible in the pics though. This next one, i could scratch. I want to have it cut open to see what it looks like inside. Its got good weight. What do you guys think? and other test i could do? Im taking it to get them looked at by the guy at the rock shop this weekend.

I wouldnt think such a small amount would react. In any case I dont have easy access to a metal dectector within 300 miles. It is small, if i can get a better camera to get some macro shots I could show you what Im talking about. Idocrase has been known to have gold in the inclusions on some specimens. It looks like gold to me.

It has the look of jade/nephrite. If you can chip a little piece off there shouldn't be any shiny spots in the break and jade/nephrite is much heavier than serpentine. If it feels a lot heavier than another stone of about the same size it could be jade/nephrite. There are a lot of copy cat stones out there so it is pretty difficult to be sure. The guy in the rock shop should have a pretty good idea of whether it is or not. I have been messing with the stuff for three years and still have a hard time telling if it is or not without an SG test. But even that is not a positive way to tell. It takes some expensive equipment to be positive. Jim
