By the look of the closeup I think you may be right on with the aventurine. If you break a piece off and it is rough but shiny it is probably quartz and if there are little glittery spots in it then aventurine it probably is.
I do not have any luck shining up quartz either. A broken surface is shinier than the shine I put on it. Jim

Well no shine on broken pieces, no glittery spots and no mica I can see. The close up is shown wet so that what the shine is from. The critter is one of my rock roaches gingerkid. They are kind of neat but have never been a big seller. I think they maybe look a little too roach like.
