I've started going through rock I brought home my last trip. This one is something I have not encountered before. Some kind of opalite is what I initially thought. The color is what throws me.Any help on ID? The first pic looks like Gary Green from a distance, but it aint.A waxy green. Thanks for any info. snuffy

It does look like opalite. Does copper occur in the area where you collected this material ? That would be one explanation for the green color. It looks like solid material, without a lot of cracks. Should cut interesting cabs.

The weird blue-green color and "waxy" texture look a whole lot like the old Skaggs jasper from the Ochoco Mountains in Oregon. Not one you see often.

Does it feel smooth and buttery?

Looks like a lot of the green vein jasper/chert/opal/agate we collect out in the Panoche Hills. Most is sedimentary and brecciated.
Pretty peice, a good nicke/ironl green.

Have you tried any tests on it yet? I agree with Don on the opalite. It just has that opal look to it. A scratch test should tell ya opalite or jasper

I'm betting on jasper, although I agree it looks like opalite. I have a piece that color brought back by a friend travelling from California to Washington so it may be an Oregon find. It looked virtually identical to yours in color and "texture." I thought it was opalite until I cut it--definitely jasper.
