The ones they sell for swamp coolers are inexpensive, last a long time, and fit those parameters. I usually get the ones where one phase (speed) is burned out but the other OK for free from the plumbers. maybe you can ask around in your area? New, a "special" lapidary 1/3 horse motor here costs $130 for a 1/3 horse. An identical new swamp cooler motor costs $75.

I had to look up "swamp cooler". I've never heard of one. I don't think they're used around here.
I recently bought a 1/3 HP motor used from a furnace repair guy. I got it for $20. I had to call almost every furnace guy in town to find one. I got all sorts of different stories. Some guys told me that it was almost impossible to get them out, others sold them to motor repair places, some wanted $50. It was worth the effort to keep calling.
Another member here says he gets them at the local scrap metal recycling place. They didn't sell them at the recycling place in my town though.

I was at Lowes last weekend and they had a clearance sale on there swamp cooler motors. $41 for a 1/2hp and $79 for a 3/4hp with an adjustable pulley, no motor stand, but they are only $10. I use these motors on most my lapidary equipment with no issues.
