Ran across this slab tonight, haven't seen anything like it. Looks like cross sections of large roots. Anyone familiar with this? Thanks!

Do the shapes continue the same way all the way through the slab to the other side? Maybe it's root, but some of the things look like shells on edge to me.
Not much help I'm afraid.
It is _really_ cool and I would want to polish the whole slab instead of cabbing it.

Doesn't look like our local root. Could be though or some kind of reed/swamp thing.

I'm a forester and I'm pretty sure those are not roots. I agree with Chuck. Those are probably the shells of some kind of small marine organism. They look like tiny mussels to me. I don't know what the red and black coloring is about though. Maybe stains from minerals leached out of the shells?

Thanks guys, I'm starting to think shells/mussels too. I'll take better pics front and back this afternoon.
Appreciate the help!

I have a good sized chunk of something similar that I've been trying to ID for months now. Same shaped inclusions in grey background, except they're all red. No black ones. I'll try to remember to post a pic later.

Man oh man, great color! I'd agree that it looks very much like fossil bivalves of some kind not too unlike some of the Devil's Toenails we get here in Texas. Several varieties of that stuff come out of Mexico but I've sure never seen a hunk that colorful.....Mel

I'd cab a piece and face polish the rest as a specimen!

I have to agree with "fossil bivalves".
The triangular shapes are very freshwater mussel like. Great colors too. Bonus stone!

You know what, some of them remind me of barnacles. I guess that still falls under the "fossil bivalve" category.
