Most of you know my rock hound buddy best friend, my 12 year old daughter Brooke. Well, she's been collecting specimens with me on field trips for the last couple of years. She's tumbled stones but never wanted to try lapidary...... until now, lol! She started a Tech Ed wood class this year and has been introduced to all sorts of equipment and techniques. A week or so ago she came home and said "Mom, I'm ready to slab rocks! Your saw can't cut my fingers off like the one I'm using at school.... teach me!" Well, me and my husband did and now I've lost control over all of my equipment ;D Hulagrub sent us some baby Stockton Geodes for tumbling. Brooke snatched the bag from me and proceeded to cut and slab a few. They were all white with some druzy. One was full of mud. Patrick snatched that one up and told us there was no way in heck we were going to wash out million year old mud into our garden! He sealed it to keep for himself, lol! Anyways, I'm tickled pink! Brooke is spending more time in my shop than I do nowadays. It's awesome and I just wanted to show some of her first pics! At the wheel: At the lap: The Stockton Geode White Druzy: More at the wheel, this time she dipped into her Michael Hoover box and found a driveway snippet that didn't need shaping on the saw: She has been doing puzzle pieces at school and decided to show me up and start a shape I've never attempted before: Not quite done with the rough but she is showing me up major! BEAMING with pride!!!! Couldn't be happier and can't wait to see the cool things that she ends up doing that I've never tried. She already has the edges of the wheel nailed..... I don't, haha!

Way to go Brooke. Now get mom to show you how she gets that killer shine on her cabs.
Krystee, a word of warning. Have Brooke tie her hair back. If one of those spinning wheels catches her hair, it'll scalp her in just a couple seconds.

She's learning and looks like she's having a great time. One bad experience could turn her off of the hobby forever.

Very cool. I've been showing my 12 year old the new Genie and she wants to give it a go to!
When she was younger she got her hair caught in a mixer and had a decent swatch taken right off the front of her head, so yeah the hair... good call Don.

I am so glad someone mentioned the hair, I have long hair and I always pull it back to cab!!!
I am so glad to see her interested in the hobby, our kids are 12 and they come and go with it!
She is turning out really nice cabs!! Tell her she does an excellent job shaping and polishing!

Those are great pictures! too bad your so far away, she would fit right in at our pebble pups club. She has a great teacher so I am sure she will be out cabbing must of us in no time.
My oldest son has been a member of our local rock club since he was 9 yrs old and when he turned 12 that's when they let him take classes on how to use the saws and grinders. That's really when I got involved up until then he just liked collecting rocks but was never able to be creative so now that he can cut and grind it has really re-sparked his interest again and now my younger son and myself have gotten hooked too.

The long hair worried me, too. I'm surprised she didn't hear about that in her wood class at school. It's such a pleasure to see our kids take an interest in our own interests. She's doing great!
