Anodized Aluminum Dop Sticks made for use with CA or possibly tape. www.cabstarpro.com/Or this Beadfix Adhesive Tape Squares... would these work for cabs?? maybe on the sticks above? www.fdjtool.com/ProductInfo/CE4220.aspxI am getting to the point where I want to do more than tumble and slab stone... I want to work on free forms and cab some of the great rock I have gotten from the great people here and what little I have collected. I know a lot of you have been at this point too... I was planning to just go buy some wooden dowels in different diameters, but saw these and I like the idea of the hole for applying the CA release to remove the cabs from the inside as well as the outside. I also figured with these the release agent might work to release the dbl sided tape too. I also like the fact that the tape is pre-cut into 1x1 squares which makes it easier to use. So I know I am leaving both this thread & myself open to the rambling of the deranged members of the forum... aka... all my friends out there, but I ask that you try to keep to the topic as much as you can because this is a learning experience for me an others that will look at it in the future and the less we wander the better it is to track. thanx bunches people!!

I cut different diameters of wood dowels and use green wax, then put in freezer about 10 minutes and it falls off. As wax is about ready I heat up stone some too.

Those look great but are pricey! I use a 3M heavy duty double sided tape on dopwax platforms I make with dowels. I make bunches of them up and as they wear by the stone getting hot and crack I can just redo them. works great

I do the wood dowels and green dop wax just as steveo does. Then reuse the wax again when I release the cab. 3M makes the double side tape in rolls up to about 12" diameter. I used it for signage attached to walls in the hospital I worked at.

I used golf tees and tape; ok. I used wooden pegs and tape; not so good. One old dop stick with wax and tape; the best. I'm going to buy some assorted wooden dowels and if they don't hold, make some dop sticks with wax and use the tape.
Sometimes the tape comes off the stone and sometimes it comes off the handle. Not much you can do when it comes off the stone.

for that issue wash the stones really good in dishsoap and then wipe down the backs with acetone and let dry overnite I have never had an issue with them coming off doing that

I have been using the dopmaster system from Diamond Pacific (P. 22 of the new catalog). and superglue since June. I haven't used the dop pot, and wooden dowels since. Robert

I don't dop but when I do for Amber I use 3M double faced outdoor tape like that Scotch stuff. I dop on to the metal washers that someone posted here a while back. She loves the system and it is pretty cheap.

Call me old fashioned but I still use the dop pot, green was and wooden dowels, then sealed a little with an alcohol lamp. The stones have never come off, and 10 minutes in the freezer and the stones fall off by themselves. No freezer handy, a glass of ice water works just as well. I've never tried CA or double sided tape I'd worry with both of them about the stone coming off.

I use fingers 99% if not I use copper tube and a plumbers flare tool then super glue and a soak in water till they come off.

then sealed a little with an alcohol lamp. Charles Do you mean you heat up the wax and shape to the stick/stone or something else... I'm a little confused when you say you "sealed with an alcohol lamp". I just use green wax on wooden dowels with heated stone (clean). Then the freezer. They don't pop off by themselves, but I just push and they usually (99% of the time) come off. Thanks!

My problem with the hole dop pot is I work in a shed in my backyard that does not have electrical wiring in it yet.... wife says maybe for christmas if I'm good and make her lots of pretties!!
Anyways the shed is pre-wired for 2 lights and 2 outlets which I am powering off an extension cord so I can't run much when the 18" is running or I blow the GFI in there. So I am looking for alternatives to using a dop pot/wax.
Thank you all for your input... I have much to think on... I may try going with the wood dowels and 3M for now until I can get a better setup or at least better sticks to use.

I use 16d nails, Green dop wax with a dop pot. I put a little piece of masking tape on the stone Then dop the nail head to the tape. Once in a great while one comes loose but only if I'm working at night and it's really cold. A bit in the freezer and they pop right off. Nails are REAL cheap and I don't have to hassle with the glue. Never tried the mounting tape

Phil, What I meant was this. I put the stone on the dop pot warming area to get it warm. I then take the dop stick (probably one I've used before that already has some wax on it) I put it in the hot wax for a short while. Then take it and press on the warmed stone. I form it onto the stone so it looks somewhat the picture in Dad's first post. I then light the alcohol lamp and let the flame heat the area where the wax meets the stone. This make a real good seal and I've never lost a cab off of one yet. That's just the way I was shown when I was first learning.

I turn aluminum dopsticks on a lathe and use cheap harbor freight epoxy to attach them. When I'm done I hold the stick with a pair of pliers, heat it up a little with the torch, and the cab comes right off. I use a razor blade to scrape off the back of the cab.

I have multiple sets of the Cab Star metal dops. I use super glue to attach the material to them. I mainly use my fingers but for smaller cabs and when my fingers are raw I use the dops. Yes they are a little pricey but I love them. My dop pot and wax have been collecting dust ever since I got them about 4 years ago. I also use a little baking soda to make the super glue harden quicker....I am impatient.

After seeing this post, I had my wife get me a roll of the outdoor tape. I put one cab on a dop stick and was amazed at how good it holds. I can't wait till it warms up enough to go out to the shed and try grinding one up. I have used CA (superglue) and epoxy and I did not like the results. Thanks for starting this thread. Jason

I was a bit worried about the holding power of the tape at first too! you just have to make sure to have the surfaces your bonding together super clean and never touch the sticky part of the tape as it won't hold if you do
another thing is making sure your bonding surface is large enough for the size of the cab your making
that is why I love making the green dop wax platforms to tape to as I can make them any diameter I need
