I always have great results. If you use 1 cup of polish use 2 cups of sugar 1-2 ratio. In 2 days i am onto a great polish, day 3 and they are done.Oh,-using AO for polish at a rate of 1 cup per per 12 pounds rock. Menu from experienced mentor. He started with Karo syrup, switched to sugar.Same result but cheaper than Karo.I never remember having a gas build up with the 400-600 SC (step 3) or the polish step when using sugar.Could the sugar serve as an anti gas agent?

I think sugar is bad in Phase 2 Tumble :nono:
but I'm all for testing the theory in my Phase 3 tumble and beyond
I bought powered sugar -by mistake- but figure that will be fine for fine grind
I have a phase 3 tumble going now I'm going to open that barrel and will re-charge with pre-polish & some powdered sugar o about a teaspoon... mostly
stay tunED for results

Next load I have ready for the polish is getting sweetened. Do you recycle the polish afterwards? I should have the fattest sugar ants in my neighborhood if this works out.

Ant mounds that are 16 feet tall.I bet the polish could be recycled-it more than the other abrasives.I do not because of my dirty operation. The recipe i was given is 1-2 1 unit grit 2 units sugar.I also add plastic pellets.Run wet(not pasty) and slow slow. In a 16 pound rotary with 1.25 cups AO and 2.5 cups sugar the rocks are pretty much polished in half a day.I leave em for 3 days.Never used sugar in a vibrator,it may be fine Carlos.

I tried sugar in the SiC stages. It fermented, produced lots of gas, nearly exploded and needed to be burped all the time, and smelled of alcohol when I did that. Eventually the yeast died and bacterial fermentation took over. There was little gas, but it smelled like rotting meat. I lived in an apartment, so disposing of the used slurry was a hassle. The stench from the slurry bucket was strong enough to gag a horse.
So that's my warning - the slurry. Even if you manage to use sugar and not produce gas, what are you going to do with the used slurry when you're done with it? You might be able to use it again, but that sugar is eventually going to get infected with something, and that isn't going to be pleasant. Ants have already been mentioned.

Never had any problems with sugar.Smells or pressure. It stays in the tumbler for 5 days with SC500 #3 step and 3-4 days in AO polish step.Never have run it longer.Looks like I will find out soon since I am experimenting with sugar and vinegar during the longer coarse step. When it comes to chemistry nothing surprises me.Can yeast and/or bacteria even survive in a tumbler?
