The NHL is in the midst of another lockout by the owners. The self same owners who got just about everything they wanted when they last locked out the players in 2004. Alas, even with everything they got the last time, an inept and greedy bunch of owners are claiming fiscal hardship and expect the players to capitulate to their demands.
There are some Hockey franchises that have financial hardship; others cannot rake it in fast enough. You have franchises worth a cool billion dollars (Toronto, despite the mediocre team record it possesses is somehow the most valuable hockey franchise). The owners of this franchise are both the most successful( team net worth) and least successful (victories returned for net worth). Mis management or genius? You also have franchises that are worth a mere 150 million dollars and cannot make ends meet.
Like all sports, they try to get the host town to pay dearly for the privilege of subsidizing ownership. Yes, hockey towns like detroit are asked to pay for a 650 million dollar arena (lets blame the unions for this).
the owners need some protection from themselves, the devils signed Ilya Kovalchuk to a 17 year 102million dollar contract that was wisely rejected by the league for circumventing the salary cap. So they were penalized but allowed to resign him to a 15year 100million dollar contract. So now I see how this greedy union is destroying the poor owner.

The players were offered a 50/50 split of revenue, they turned it down. Who's greedy? No one is worth 102 million. These players forget that they are working for the owners. Not the other way around. As for Toronto, there just plain stupid!! Why would the owners of the leafs better themselves? Hell if you can play 2nd rate players and still sell out. Only tells them one thing. There fans are just dumb!!!!

Again not a fan of team sports so I really don't care if they play or not but I too think folks get paid way to much for playing a "game". Taxpayers should not have to fund stadiums period! Fans should go on strike so the owners would have to lower ticket prices and bring player salaries back in line with the real world....Mel

WHY are we paying for private interests making still more money? If taxpayers have to pay for stadiums, then they should pay 50% splits to the Taxpayers who funded those stadiums as profit sharing.
