I just bought a tumbler for my son, as a do together hobby. He is 10 years old and had started a rock collection. So, I thought it would be cool to get him some tools so that he could do it himself.
I've seen some people here doing an awful lot of tumbling and was curious what they did with the rocks. I know some collect and some create jewerly... what else? Give them away? Sell them?
Just curious...

Give them away seems to be popular.

Whatever your imagination can conceive! You can always make a lamp out of a stone lighthouse. Or if you're like me, you could have the shiniest driveway in the county. Ron

There's a lot you can do, especially once you have a good stock. I like to seperate my beach tumbles by color and fill shaped vases with them, for decoration. I also give many away, as well as make jewelry and display pieces.
Some day I hope to have enough to make a rock-topped table with, and mosaic bird houses, stuff like that.

hey blizofoz...there is tons of stuff to do with tumbled rocks...vases.. mason jars..driveways ;D..as the others said....some are suitable for fish aquariums i beleive..(ask board before putting in with fish). but i always have some sitting on a table by the door for people to take 1 or 2...and when younger children come in they will sit there on the floor quite awhile looking at and rubbing them and if you do anything like this for the kids...yes it is important for the container to have a wide opening...here is a pic of our rock table freebies. clickable

I keep thinking about the bird house idea. Grandma has a wren house that has seen better days but sided with polished stones it would be pretty cool. Has anyone done this?

If you like candles a dish of polished stones with a candle in the middle is a great decoration.

These are all great suggestions, but why not let your son decide? Give him a large hand in the process. Maybe he will want to give his favorite rock to his favorite teacher, or maybe he will want to keep it to look at, either way it will be his choice from something you did together.

The more rocks you tumble and polish, the more ideas you get! He'll probably want to keep them all because they will be so beautiful and it will be something he has done himself. Hopefully this will teach him the joy of WAITING for something good. I've gotten so good at waiting that I sometimes forget that I even have a tumbler going!

Small glass fish bowls with wide mouths are nice. I also give lots to the kids around the house Yesterday 2 of them came over and shoveled the walk for some polished stones that was a nice treat I did not want to go out and do it hehe The uses are only limited by you and your sons imagination. Have fun and keep them rolling Steph

Waiting? What's that? Kids now adays don't understand that, but yes, this would definitly show that waiting is worth the final outcome.
Oh, yes, I could see him giving out the rocks, maybe in a glass dish with a candle, for X-Mas presents. Nice idea!
Thanks for the replies! I was just curious as what some of these people do with all those rocks!
Keep the ideas comming!!!

I have done a number of things with mine. Most I used someone else's idea. The favorite I got from someone here was what I call rock buddies. I take regular tumbled rocks add tails, feet, etc. and put eyes on them. I gave these to my grandchildren at Christmas, and they loved them. The idea I had on my own, in fact I posted it here was take a rock, cut a slab, then make a shape from another slab, tumble all except the original end and one slab. Get a history of the rock, Decoupage it to a board, then align your original rock, untumbled slab, tumbled slab, and shape. Showes whole process from rock to finished shape. I have to apolige to the person I got idea for rock buddies from, I forgot who it was. Terry
