We did a combined snow trip plus rockhounding trip up to Wrightwood today. Weather was clear and cold up in Wrightwood with a nice dusting (three to four additional inches) of new snow from the last storm. Along the way we did some impromptu rockhounding in the riverbed that cuts through the town. Also had lunch at the Grizzly Cafe - great food and really nice folks. Sorry only photos of the snow since I'm pretty sure that most of you know what actinolite looks like. Andrew Nathaniel Barbara was a real trooper today. She's been fighting off a cold and still joined the boys in the snow. Thanks for checking out the thread. Paul

Actinolite is the most common one. From palm sized pieces to 100# chunks. Tremolite is also found but only one or two pieces per visit.
Rhodonite is quite hard to find. I have seen only one piece from the river channel. The source in the mountain above town seems to be cut off from access. Still working on it.

Wow, it looks really cold! Wrightwood is beautiful, you could have kept going, catch the us10 and checked out Lavic. The jasper jumps into your pockets. We are getting ready for a trip to the desert around Jan. 9 or 10. Anyone interested? Or will anyone be in the area? I would love to meet some of the clan from RTH

Hi folks -
Yes the actinolite is common and quickly found in the riverbed, as Shotgunner mentions. This particular pass, we came away with some 2"-3" chuncks and one nice football sized piece that must've weighed in around 10+ lbs. Rhodonite is supposedly up there as well but I've never found any. Lots of standard common white quartz. I did tumble a barrel full that Nathaniel brought back on an earlier trip. Comes out nice.
The scenery is beautiful up there. Wrightwood is a place I'd consider moving although it was really cold!!! Lovely area though!
We've been to Lavic a few times but haven't had a chance to get out much with all the boys school and sports activities. Plus the holidays. Maybe soon, as a Lavic trip would be fun again!
Thanks for checking out the thread. Paul
