Does obsidian come in this color, or is this glass? I understand that obsidian is naturally formed glass, so maybe a better question is, "Is this man made or natural?"

I found it on my wife's desk in her science room. She told me it was obsidian. I didn't believe her. She's almost always right, so this is an exciting moment.

There is supposedly green obsidian from Mexico ( but it might be a created material) and of course there are things like Mt. St Helen ash that's been melted so it looks like green obsidian. I'd guess what you have is slag glass though....Mel

the Mt.Saint Helens glass is bogus!
they put a miniscule amount of ash into a batch of glass and call it Mt.Saint Helens glass - it a touristy thing and it comes in a lot of colors, as many colores as glass come in
the ash from the volcano in NOT silica rich and will not make glass by its self

Yup, man-made slag glass. Though you see the stuff sold as "natural obsidian" all the time on the internet and some shows, all of the transparent, highly-colored "obsidian" tested by reputable labs has turned out to be artificial glass.

Looks like a recycled glass chunk or cullet glass. It's cool stuff
