I have some epidosite that is really nice except it's pretty fractured. I'd like to try putting super glue in the cracks and see if that will keep the grit out and hold the rock together through the polishing. Has anyone tried this, does it work?

I'm guessing no. I use super glues on fractures on large specimens I grind/polish with my wet polisher. The glue doesn't always survive. The rocks would have to be really clean to have any chance.

Super glue is, to a degree, water soluble. That's how to get glued fingers, or any thing else, back apart; soak in water. I use epoxy.

yea I guess bad material is bad material. I should just be brutally honest about the rocks I'm spending grit on.

To use any type of filler it`s important to first give it a cleaning with acetone or a mild acid solution and allowed to dry. Otherwise filler won`t bond well to stone.

That's good advice. I'll have to play around with it. Right now I'm just seeing how far I need to grind them down in stage 1 to get around the fractures. Some of them are pretty deep. It's good and hard material too so it should shiny up nice.

I use Hxtal to fill in pits and fractures on slabs and have used the scrap slab pieces in my tumblers with excellent results. It's completely water proof but it's also expensive.

very cool... may have to get some of the thin stuff to see how it works on some highly fractured material I have. I want to save the Opticon for really $$ pieces.

the red is great for hairline and healed fractures. for pits and larger stuff, get the super t.

I found a thick gel type super glue at Home Depot that sets fast and holds well for filling small voids. Not for hairline or deep wounds probably. There is less drip with this stuff than the red tubes.
