Bought a box of assorted agates for $20.00 and found this one in it. Looks like it has plume in it, but when I cut it ..... ?? Any info is good.. I have yet to slab this, but would like some idea of what it is before I do. Thanx in advance!!

Looks to be Spiderweb Rhyolite/Jasper from Oregon.
(Shameless plug) See 2012 Agate Index Vol 2 Northwest - pg 299.
Check and see.

Yup, Lowell nailed it. I was told the claims used to be around Heppner, Oregon and it's not commonly seen these days. It's actually a highly silicified rhyolite and takes a great polish...Mel

Spiderman jasper is pretty cool looking too. It too is kind of a rhyolite with red spiderweb pattens on a black background. I think it is from Idaho, if I'm remembering correctly. It is also, in my experience, a bit more difficult material to polish....Mel

Lowell YUP YUP ... just looked it up.... hit the nail on the head with that call.... I had to dig to get my copy on the PC.. I am debating to have the book bound so I can reference it easier. I want to keep a copy of it in my shed/workshop and 1 in my office. I have the version from too, been using that the most, just have to get used to looking in the new copies too now!

I found it to fall to pieces in the vibe. The pieces that held together did polish well and looked nice. I never tried cabbing it. It may be ok with a light hand on the grindstone.

Those are gorgeous and one of my favorite rocks for the weird color! I wanted one so bad, I broke down and bought 2 on ebay, he's one of them: the slab is so beautiful and so full of vugs, it wouldn't make a good cab, but no way would I wreck the slab anyway! Another one I had to get is mushroom rhyolite. I like them so much I got 3 of them on ebay, this is my favorite one for the colors: 2nd one: And this one is wild looking, each 'mushroom' has a little crystal cluster 'hat' .
