Guess they plan on getting every last one of 'em!
What gets me is PETA saying that decapitation with a machete is "borderline barbaric" and that "allowing hunters to decapitate pythons—who remain alive and in agony and who will writhe for an hour even after their heads have been cut off—is despicably cruel," PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk in a released statement. "
Excuse me?!? Yes, a headless body can and will writhe after the head is removed. However, as far as I know, the brain will not feel "agony" with the spinal cord severed. I'm thinking that severing the snakes' head would be just as humane as what PETA recommended, a gunshot to the old brainpan. Jean

What will be funny is to see the 'hunters' who forgot their mosquito repellent 2 hours into the 'hunt' in the Everglades:P. People still listen to PETA? PETA is repulsive... there's entire sites dedicated to exposing PETA: www.petakillsanimals.com/"What is Peta Kills Animals? People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has a problem. Despite its mission to advocate for "total animal liberation," government documents obtained through public records requests indicate that each year PETA kills thousands of animals at its headquarters. According to records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA has killed more than 25,000 animals (mostly dogs and cats) at its headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia." ----------------- A few years ago, I read the most disturbing local news article about PETA members going to a Vet's office and ADOPTING the animals, then a vet assistant going out to the dumpster that afternoon and FINDING the animals PETA adopted in there dead. They called the local news station and it became a news segment. Incredible. Now they have Vets, pet owners, and of course Corporations who want to do animal testing out to get PETA, for darn good reason (I'm sorry, I agree with animal testing. I selfishly want them to kill an animal instead of killing my child or my elderly mom to see if a drug WORKS before we buy it).

in all actuality, I don't think a January hunt for pyuthons will be rewarding. Maybe I am wrong, but I think their main activity periods are in mar-april-may.
This is feel good hunting. The snakes will die, but the hunters do not seem to be allowed to sell the leather. Python leathers makes beautiful boots.
A real biologist knows that no predator (humans) will kill all of it's prey (pythons in the everglades). This is a public relations stunt. Put in place partially, to allow the reptile community the ability to feel like it is helping out with a problem that was started by one of their own, with a little help from hurricane andrew.

Man, I sure hope they can skin and sell them. There ought to be some good looking hat bands, belts, boots shoes and all sorts of things possible from them. At least that way the wildlife the snakes are eradicating won't totally be wasted... So where are the ecos who should be screaming about the extinction of the indigenous fauna of the everglades??? Not political enough? They only want to raise a ruckus about out west? WT(X)?

One of my favorite t-shirts: "There's A Place For All God's Creatures ... Right next To The Potatoes & Gravy!"
Seems like it would be a huge waste NOT to use the skins. But I guess that's how those things go... Jean
