I am looking for 'Optical Quartz'. Does anyone know where I can purchase any of this. I have been wanting to start making Intartia and I have lots of opals from Lighting Ridge   that I need to cap.
If not Optical Quartz, what do any of you use.

I found some at Eds House Of Gems in Portland a couple month back. I don't remember how much I paid for a pound though. I have a gig in Portland Saturday and in our drive back to Seattle we are going to stop there. Do you want me to pick some up and I can ship them to you. They were nice tumble size but I can see if they have larger.
Cheers Matt

Hey Matt, I couldn't look up anything on that website, it just does not seem to be very user friendly, at least for the things that I wanted to look at. If you were going to stop, I could use a few chunks of quartz, clear quartz. Thanks so much,
Tammy

I only use Synthetic optical Quartz. It comes in bar shapes, is optically clear and well shaped to make caps with little waste and is chemically and physically the same as natural material. A friend of mine who used to own a rock shop in the Bay Area still stocks and sells this material. Here is what the small size bars looks like: The mediun size: And the large size: PM me and I will send you his contact information. Bob

I'll pick some up if they still have them and if you find another source for them or don't like what I find I'm happy to keep them for my own collection. Matt

Ah I'm sad, we pulled into Eds rock and gem and are closed. We are heading home from our Portland trip and going to try bobs rock and gem in Seattle.

I've picked up some small slabs of it over the last year or two at rock shows, Quartzsite being one of them. I also bought some basenite (for backing) from the same folks. I thinkthye were in Tyson Wells at Quartzsite. Jean

Oops I meant Jerrys rock and gem. Well I wish we could of helped out today but Sundays are not a day to go store to store hounding. They are all closed . I had a gig in Portland Saturday and thought it would be fun to hit them up Sunday on our drive back. Sounds like you have some good options though from other members. I hope you find some soon. Well this is just my 2 cents worth what bobby1 posted is what most are using now just can't get anything better. Having hardly no waste makes up for the cost in my opinion. Optical Clear is what you want you see the true stone as it is. George
