Is it a myth that any chip or fracture in polish will ruin a batch? Three of my last five batches have had 1 or more small chips. I tumble a lot of "junk" One batch some time ago had and agate fracture leaving two relatively large pieces with razor sharp edges. All of these batches had as good a shine as I normally achieve. I say myth. Has anyone here had a ruined batch due to fractures or chips?

I've had a few batches damaged by sharp edges and fractures. But, others came out fine. I think if your slurry is just right and the barrel is filled so the material flows smoothly odds are a sharp edge won't do any harm.

It is not the chip or fracture that damages the polish run. But--chips and fractures make it easier for grit to "hide" and avoid being washed out. Grit that is hiding immediately extricates itself in your polish stage and wanders around the barrel happily slicing up the polish. I tumble stuff with chips and fractures frequently, and occasionally there's a problem. Usually there's not.
