If I could partake of the collective wisdom of the group for some Id help. I found only one piece of this material on my last trip up to Panoche Hills. I love the fractured and healed look of rocks from that area. The body is midnight blue and the jumbled pieces inside are a slightly lighter shade. These pictures are wet. I found some dumorturite in the area, but this has a much finer grain. Attachments:

HRM!!!! I have NOOO clue what yours is... but it looks a lot like ones I have... and I have no clue what MINE are EITHER!!! Panoche hills you say? That's a better clue than I had before:). Mine's blue/green with a slightly chantoyant or 2-tone sheen (bit like Thai silk), and the white is sort of druzy like. I can't tell if your color is exactly the same because your pix is so dark, but the rock looks similar: Here is the backside druzy 'skirt' on another piece of it: And here's the third one, strangest of all, with bright orange spots (but not like bloodstone at all, more like poppies) - the 2 above have no orange spots, only this one, but it's the same rock: I bought it at the estate of a man who died 20 years before his wife did, it was her estate sale, so these rocks may have been collected 30-40 years ago.

Yep, that last one appears to be bloodstone. Much of that comes from trhe Deccan in India but we used to get good bloodstone up by our place in Hornitos too. I does often seem to be associated with orbicular and poppy type jasper....Mel

blue/green with a slightly chantoyant ... maybe jadeite? How hard is it - and the white stuff - again, how hard? Test against quartz and tell us which 'gives'.

Pretty hard, I'd guess 6-7. Don't think it's jadeite... I've never heard of chantoyant jade??

yes very high quality jade is extremely chatoyant. I find it doesn't come across easily in photos though. I'm having trouble finding you a decent image.. umm try this .. even looks like yours: www.bidbud.co.nz/536249816

I'll have to follow this thread for the outcome. A friend of mine went to one of the last field trips up at Panoche Hills, and he gave me a slab of the very same stuff. No idear what it is, though. It don't look anything like the other photos posted. Jean

It's not the same color as jadeite... this is DARK blue/green, but in no lighting does it look black. It's incredible looking actually, possibly the most interesting color of all my rocks, kind of velvety.
But apparently, there's odd pieces of it in Panoche Hills, Ca??

I have similar stone here in both dark with light stripes and light with dark stripes. Mine cuts just like quartz when I hand cut it. None of it has the sharp contrast lines like Helen's stone and that is what I do not like about it. It always looks hazy or cloudy. Jim

It can and does come in allmost any colour. I have 70 lbs of jadeite that range from clear to black, with mauve, all different greens, and blue in the range. nephrite is a little more limited in colour range and rarer in anything but greens Lloyd

Hard to tell about Barclays from the pic, but Helens sure looks like a jasper from a fault line area of CA, pretty typical of the broken up jaspers filled with agate. The red poppy looking orbs in the green jasper are remarkable, should make for some very nice cabs.
