Here's a two parter. I found these two pieces at in the Pescadero State Beach area, San Mateo County. California. Can any one tell me what in the world do I have here? One looks like a brain neuron in some sort of black and gray matrix. And the other is "banded". Different view to follow in the "reply". Attachments:

Brown one looks like banded chert. Lots of that from the Franciscan Formation in the Coast ranges. Other one looks to be maybe a rhyolite with a little vein of banded agate. Similar agate fills in some of the brecciated jasper from the Coast Ranges too. I used to rockhound that rocky beach area when I was a kid. Really some interesting stuff there, even a little poppy jasper now and then....Mel
