I would say quarts but I can't make a mark on it with any quarts..so I'm guessing it's harder... Attachments:

It looks nothing like any topaz I've ever seen. If the two pieces of quartz are of exactly equal hardness, I don't think they should be able to scratch each other, or not easily or very much. If the stones had rough surfaces like the one in your post, it would be hard to observe any scratching that might occur. It's rose quartz.

okay cool good enough for me.. I just remember my one geo. class and the hardness test saying that same hardness quarts will scratch each other.. I did my best to find a spot to observe any change but never saw anything. And I really never have seen much topaz. I just picked a stone that would be harder.... now that I think about it my brother found a yellow topaz crystal and it was noticeably heaver than quartz of same size... thanks all .. I'll try to find a better mystery stone next time..
