Seriously though, does anyone know what this stuff is? Found it and a lot of it's little buddies in the Pescadero beach area of California. I don't think it's serpentine because it seems harder and it doesn't look like any photos I can find. The only thing I can say for sure is that it's green - slightly darker and more foresty green in real life - and it's very hard stuff. The silver 'scratches' you can see in one of the pictures is the steel that a nail deposited when I tried to scratch it. I tried to streak it on a piece of white ceramic tile but I must be doing it wrong because it just got white on the rock... Any ideas?

Translucent or opaque? I'm curious to find out what everyone thinks. It seems like when-in-doubt chert. ;D

Completely opaque - no translucency that I can see at all. I've polished a lot of other pieces of it and it takes a pretty good shine.

can you do a specific gravity? Weigh a cup of water, then weigh the water again with this stone submerged in the water and the weight the stone.
Divide the stone weight by the increase in water weight.
White streak is a characteristic for sure.
Can we see a polished piece? Is it like glass or shiny with some texture to the surface?

don't know what it is, but if you get anymore in quantity let me know.. I have a project in the works and needs lots of green stone large enough for slabbing/cabbing if I can find it... got some different stuff, all green, starting to trickle in now, and can always use more!!!

can you do a specific gravity? thanks Scott, no I don't have a scale ... yet ... but it sounds like the perfect reason to buy one though Allow me to clarify - the tile I was using was probably the wrong kind because it just made a white streak on the rock - I think it's supposed to be the other way around. I'm going to have to backtrack on the polish comment - I realized today while at work that this big green rock was actually collected while up north of Bodega Bay. The rest of that batch is still tumbling so I really don't know if I have any more of the same stuff or if it holds a polish. I took this rock out early because it's so large and out of proportion to the rest of the tumble load. I'm getting confused about collection locations because we've been collecting every green rock in sight for a decoration in a newly remodeled bathroom but up till now all the polished stuff came from Pescadero.

OK I hit one end of it with the grinder tonight up through 1200 grit and here's what I've got - it easily accepts a really good polish. Anyone any closer to an idea now or are you all holding out for the sg test? heehee.

Interesting. I'm really curious what it is. Maybe you can name it "avocado jasper". ;D

It's neat stuff ,that's all I got to offer.. I love green stone, I got a few I need to post as well. I took a green stone to a geology class years back and it was the only one my teacher was really interested in he took it to get it looked at and i was only serpentinite ,he thought Jadeite.. was a bummer..

Can you chip a piece off the little end? If it chips smooth it will more than likely be some kind of jasper/agate. If the break is rough it could be nephrite or nephrite mix. Quartz will break rough but shiny. The specific gravity would narrow it down a lot but there are a hell of a lot of green rocks out there that only a geologist can identify. Jim

Don't let the color mislead you. Look at the pattern in it. It's pet wood.
